I have a 2006 Explorer that is giving me a check engine light. It is P0446. The explorer has about 75,000 miles on it. Anyone ever have this code? I did some research and really havent found anything helpful other than a gas cap and that never seems to fix problems. Let me know. Thanks

Robert

Where is this thing at and how would I figure out if its bad?

Hey Robert - Yes, I have the same problem - 2007 Explorer EB with the V8 and 57,000 miles. Tried the gas cap replacement - no change. I have attempted to try and find the canister and vent valve also. I believe it is above either the spare tire OR gas tank. I have asked for help on locating it on this forum and another one ---- maybe no-one else has ever had to locate their charcoal canister on these years/models ????

Do niether of you have a Haynes manual, it covers 02'-10'?

Well if you did you'd see the EVAP system in chapter 6-42 but here's a quote from the manual about the EVAP system "This system is complex and virtually impossible to troubleshoot without the right tools and training."
Good luck fellas.:bsnicker:

And after reading what the EVAP system does and how, I think it's safe to say we can thank the environmentalist for it.:shoot:

No, I don't have one. This is my girlfriend's mom's car. I was just seeing if I could help her out. I've worked on plenty of vehicles but never on anything dealing with the EVAP stuff. I'm not to worried about it. I just wanted to see if it was something that was easily fixed.

I have a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer with the same problem. P0446 code that will clear but then comes back on after the next startup. Already replaced the gas cap, and the canister vent valve with no results. The vent valve is located in front of the spare tire on the passenger side of the vehicle and has an electrical connector plugged into the bottom. From what I have seen online, this valve is usually the cause of this code, however it didn't fix my problem. I think the vent valve connector or the canister itself may be bad. Unfortunately, if the canister is bad then the gas tank has to be pulled out to replace it. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Just following up... Fixed the problem. Turns out the electrical connector to the canister vent valve was corroded and needed to be replaced. Fixed it and the check engine light turned off.
