I am 56 years old and know little-to-nothing about vehicles and don't know what to do.

Service Engine Light issue...the light came on 11/28/Monday then went out for 2 days after I put in a bottle of Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment. (Of course I don't know if the Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment had anything to do with it.)

Anyway, after it came back on last Wednesday AutoZone's code reader thing came up with the same code two days in a row:

The code was P0506. The printout they gave me said:

DEFINITION:
IAC circuit condition or idle speed higher/lower than expected.

EXPLANATION:
The ECM has detected that the IAC counts are higher or lower than expected. The engine speed is not in its expected range.

PROBABLE CAUSE:
(1) vacuum leak on engine or
(2) dirty throttle body, or
(3) IAC motor defective, or
(4) poor electrical connection to the IAC valve.

Should I pay a dealer $90 to put it on their computer? Is there some simple and/or cheap remedy I could try first?

By the way, this same thing happened last year. A dealer was going to "fix it" for $800. Instead, I put a bottle of Lucas Oil Fuel Treatment in it and the light went out and remained out until a few days ago. Again, I don't know if the Lucas had anything to do with it.

The only other issue with the Explorer in 2011 is that I had to replace the transmission half-case (or whatever it's called) because it had a leak. (Could this have something to do with it?)

I just don't have a of money to waste on a remedy.

I need solid advice. Thank you very much!

Bill

Thanks man!

My son will probably know who can do as you advised. I guess you mean take it to a garage......see, I told you I know nothing.

Clean the throttle body and then disconnect the battery. There is no iac valve on 2005. Ford also has a tsb for reprogramming the pcm but this will work also.

I have same car... Approx same miles... Just had same codes.

Was starting 'weird'... Hunting a bit for idle... Anyway, maf cleaner on maf, then throttle body with... Tb cleaner... Fixed it! Very few times I think I know problem, take action, and it fixes it... And on the first time!!!!

Good luck! Let us know.

The Service Engine Light went off yesterday (Saturday)! The only thing I did was add Lucas injector cleaner...so what does that mean? Does it mean that the problem might have been the throttle body?

I have read in several places that our explorers with 4.6 V8s don't have an IAC because that is done by throttle body. If that is the case, why does the above part exist?

My 2003 ford workshop manual shows IAC on 4.6. Page 303-04B-33. Part 9F715.
