Coil spring pads

Is there any reason you have to use the thin plastic pads under the coil spring a 1st gen. ex?Mine are just about destroyed.I have J hooks to hold the coil in place.Other then rubbing I don't see a need for them.

they are just to stop squeaking and popping of the front end when it moves
