Im looking at buying new spark plugs and coils for my V8 Ex and was wondering if anyone has any recomendations as to which product to choose.

ive seen the Accel, Granatelli, and MSD Coils in various performance ranges, anyone had any experience with these? do u actually see much benefit from the extra spark like they say? should i get the best ones available or is there not much difference between the top and the mid range ones. e.g like these ones

http://www.jegs.com/i/Granatelli/467/28-1697CP/10002/-1

I was lookin at the bosch platinum plugs that have the 4 electrodes. r they gonna be worth it? or is NGK better?

cheers for any help guys

If you have the v8 4.6L some people on this forum recommends go for the Motorcraft OEM replacement part..... do not use bosh in spark plugs...

Any reason behind not using the bosch?

Bosch plugs have a bad habbit of violently shooting out of the cylenderheads...i shot 3 in less than a year and it cost me a new engine.... STICK TO MOTORCRAFT OR PULSTAR plugs...i <3 my pulstars. if your going to go with new coils go with GMS 60,000 volts...the make a big difference through out the entire power range.

do u guys know where i could get some motorcraft plugs from an online store or similar? here in australia we mainly get bosch and ngk, its very diffcult and expensive to get motorcraft products.

also ive found the 60,000 volt GMS coils on JEGS website for $500 can u get them any cheaper anywhere else?

anything i need to buy for this car im forced to look on the internet for american stores because aftermarket parts here just dont exist , and oem parts r ridiculously expensive. Just for NGK Iridium plugs ur looking at $25 each.

some one on the site does oem supply motorcraft. Check the main page. I paid roughly 500 for my coils as well.

I have been researching about performance COPS and the main thing I have heard is, "stay with stock." I can post a link or two from a site that deals with mostly Mustangs(svtperformance.com) and this question has come up a lot. The money invested for the gain will be minimal at best, it at all. It's said that stock COPS can handle up to 700hp easily. Now if your current COPS are failing, then of course any new set will show a gain. But if it's running fine, I'd leave them alone.

Also, I put some NGK Platinums in last week and she runs like a champ! Motorcraft would be best, but if it's a hassel to get them, then NGK will do fine.

EDIT: You said $25 a plug for NGK? You don't mean Pulstar's do you?

yeh i think ill be goin for NGK's either form autoanything.com or maybe Jegs website. unless someone can recommend a cheaper website to get them from?

I dont know if the COPS r part of my rough idle problem or not , but i definately want to replace them, and i like to get hold of the best i can so i think ill get the GMS ones.

the $25 for NGK plugs r for the iridium ones, the TR55IX one. thats in the local auto stores around here anyway.

so far the bosch plugs are awsome , only have them in 1k miles so hard to say.
i have the 4.6 and let me tell you there not like changing plugs on the old school motors. these are the plugs i put in.
004.jpg

take your time and pull the coils off , but before you pull the plugs , vaccum the bore out , mine had allot of junk in there, if you don't all that crap will go right into your cylinder chamber. :(

P.S.
make sure you follow the torque specs for the plugs , remember they are aluminum heads.......

No offense to anyone trying the Bosch, but these plugs are junk in Fords. Motorcraft or Autolites. I have heard that the NGK's hold up decent.

bosch plugs are junk in anything. Stick with the stock ones, Of if you have a choice bosch or NGK. NGK!!

GOOD Luck

i will say this ONE MORE TIME. BOSCH PLUGS WILL EVENTUALY SHOOT FORTH FROM ANY 4.6L HEAD THAT IS PRE 2003 (2004+ explorers are safe)... dont play the odds for a gimmic... i shot three in less than a year and it cost me a new motor...

hey zero were they original plugs in the pre-03' the 2 piece break in half when you change them even if you're carefull drop the bottom part into the cylinder head yell a couple curse words o crap what will i do now cost alot of money to fix spark plugs ????

nope. Mine were bosch +4's. The engine ran smooth as a feather...its just they had a bad habbit of exiting the cylenderhead and ruining my Coil packs and denting sheet metal.. stripping the cylenderhead while doing it. They sell a kit to redo the threads along with an anti blow out piece, but the 03+ heads came with this from the factory.

so why do the bosch plugs do this but no other plugs?

i have never run anything other than bosch plugs in my other cars, hell ive got one old ford that wont run on anything but bosch plugs so ive been very happy with them in the past and have never had any problems. so i find it odd that they would do something like spit out of the head??

screw bosch. bought my 04 4.0 in 08 and had them less than a year (truck only has 88,000 miles). when i upgraded all ignition, pulled them out and sure enough tip is burnt all the way down in a few cylinders. If you wanna pay good money for ur plugs do what i did get the autolite iridium XP! they are made by motorcraft so they are basically a ford part and made a huge difference with the ACCel EDIS and JBA cables from EE. good luck!

the early ford SOHC PI heads were rather picky, and they didnt have a lot of threads considering the high compression and the fact they were aluminum, its more than likely fords end, but its unmistakeable that bosch is bad news in these engines.
