Would like to thank everyone on this site for their contibutions it has made my life so much easier. My question is as follow

I have an Explorer-XLT, 99, 4.0, 50k miles. Early in the morning the weather is about 40 degrees it takes a considerable amout of time for my vehicle to stay running I have to maintain 2k rpm's for it to stay on. This has been going on for awhile a few days ago my engine lite came on, had Auto Zone check it on their computer and got a code reading of PO 172 & PO 174 for OBD-II. I was told by the Auto zone people it was related to the O2 sensors going bad if so which ones there are 4 of them and expensive to replace. The Hayes manual show these codes to be System adaptive fuel too rich (Bank 1 & 2) and too lean (Bank 2) After reading a few of the threads is it right to say that it's related to leaking intake manifold "O" ring seals and not the O2 sensors. Can I buy this OOM12 kit online. Thank You all.

The 00M12 is a recall for Camshaft Chain Tensioner & Intake Gasket. More than likely your 02 sensor are bad. Given that you have 50,000 miles, I would expect that to happen. Also try cleaning your MAF and IAC, that might also help.

That is the same exact problem i was having and it was the OOM12 recall that was the problem. Unfortunatly the ford dealership that I initially took it to forgot to mention it. I ended up taking it over to a small shop and they did the O rings, but didn't do the tensioner, now I have to shell out to the tensioner also.

Thanks, but I've changed the IAC around March, and cleaned the MAF about 1 month ago the vehicle is still the same during cold days. Not sure about the O2 sensors since I was told by a sales person, I would rather get technical advise from this forum. I would hate to have to change all 4 sensors and still have the same problem.

if you plan on changing the 02 sensors, I highly recommend doing them in pairs, I would do the front two upstream.

If your o2 sensors are bad then you only need to replace the two in front of the catalytic converters. The two (sometimes one) sensors located after the converters are catalyst monitors and have no effect on fuel control. Those two sensors are only there to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converters. You are getting to the mileage that I would expect the o2 sensors to begin failing (typically 60k) so it wouldn't hurt replacing them. The most common cause for the your concern as described is the intake plenum gaskets. I don't know about the dealerships in your area but we have sold many of the 00M12 kits to customers and shops if they were out of the 72K mile limitation on the recall. The part number is YL2Z-9E473-AA. This number may have been superceded but they can get the new one from it.
