I will be a freshman in the fall. I will be traveling 60-70 miles a day to college. I found a really clean, red, '95 Ford Explorer, 4 door, 56,000 miles, the price is $8495. The dealership said they could work with us. Is this too expensive?? Is this a reliable vehichle? How much money am I looking at to kepp it up? Thanks.

welcome alicia.. $8,500 seems a bit steep, do you know which model level it is (xlt, sport, EB, LTD), and does it have the v8, leather, etc? i just bought a 97 ltd for my college car, and i personally am driving it about 60 miles a day, and couldnt be happier, if you find an EX in good shape, they are awesome vehicles, but it also depends on where your going to college.. feel free to IM or email me if you have any questions, i helped my sis pick out an explorer, it would be my pleasure to help you
 






you should have someone who knows about off road trucks and suspensions, etc, look at that truck for you to see if it was abused. because as far as kelley blue book is concerned, that is a smoking deal!

I bought my Ex for the purpose of taking it to college. I won't be commuting to class like you are, but I will be travelling a lot. I live about 300 miles away from school and I have to cross some mountains to get there. I bought my Ex b/c of its size (so I can load all my junk up in there for school), its power (to handle the mountains), and its semi-reliability. While you could get a vehicle that gets better gas mileage, an Ex is a perfect commuter vehicle with tons of creature comforts.

Take the Ex to an independent mechanic and ask them to look over it, that way you know its not a lemon.

For a vehicle with 56,000, I don't think that's too bad a price. I think the dealer is and will be willing to work with you because of the fact that there are so many Explorers out there. Because of the volume, you can get them at a decent price nowadays because dealers know it's just as easy for you to go somewhere else and find just as good as, if not a better deal.

As far as a college vehicle goes, I'd say it will do you well. It's great for loading up all of your belongings and taking them with you and on the highway you'll do well with gas mileage, especially if it's a V6. If you find a '97 or up Explorer with a SOHC V6, I'd go for that. It has more power and gets better gas mileage. No matter what, trying to stick with low mileage vehicles, less likelihood of picking up a lemon.

No matter what, it may be worth the expense of having a reliable, independent mechanic check the vehicle out and make sure it is in good running order. Make sure that the vehicle’s Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is upgraded or has been replaced. The notorious wiper problem is prevalent with Explorers and it results from a malfunction with the GEM. It’s not a serious problem that will result in any damage or adverse effects, but it can be a nuisance and it will cost some money if you were to replace it after you purchase the vehicle.

You may also want to ask if the multifunction switch has been replaced or upgraded. They usually replace this with the GEM in order to correct the wiper issue. It’s Ford’s way of killing two birds with one stone in case one of either are the source for the wiper problem. (The “wiper problem” is that the windshield wipers tend to come on randomly or, when they are on, they function at random with little reference to what speed you are attempting to have them wipe. During rain, you have to move the switch if they fail to wipe in order to actuate the wiping function. Like I said, it's more a nuisance than a real concern, but it is something you more than likely do not want to contend with on your own.) The wiper problem was a recall on 98+ (maybe just ‘99+) Explorers, but all model years appear to have the issue.

If you end up looking at an Explorer with the SOHC engine, check to find out if the timing tension has been fixed or upgraded. This was actually a recall, but you don’t want to rely on the previous owner or the dealer taking the initiative to have the problem fixed.

Be sure to have the transmission checked. This is the one noted weakness of the Explorer, but it is my belief that so long as it is maintained properly, the transmissions in the Explorer will last as long as any other vehcile. I’ve heard of members who replaced them at just over 70,000 miles while I have over 123,000 miles on my ’96 and have yet to replace or fix any transmission problems. It is running well and will eventually need service in the future, but that will only be a result of how I use (off road driving isn’t the best on tranny’s) and maintain it.

Dollar for dollar, the Explorer is one of the best SUV’s available. So long as it is maintained properly, it will last you longer than most vehicles. I’ve heard of the 4.0L OHV engine that many Explorers have go up to 500,000 original miles with no real work performed. My old boss had an all-original ’91 with 230,000 miles without a problem (tranny and engine). She traded it in for a new 2001 a little while back and was pleased with both vehicles. She had trouble justifying a new Explorer simply because she didn’t have any problems with the one she had.

So, have it checked out, take it to an independent mechanic to have everything checked out, and take care of it and you will be surprised with how well it lasts you.

Not too many freshman college students would have the good sense to be such a smart consumer and educate themselves on something like this. Heck, not too many adults take the time to look before they leap!

I bought an Explorer as my college vehicle....then lifted it 6" and put 33's on it and it's still my college vehicle :D

56k miles ain't too bad...

Well lets see. I paid (less than a year ago) $9,500 for my 1995 XLT (showroom clean and still is) with tow package and 6 disk CD with about 68K on it.

I now have about 80K (what the hell, I must drive too much). I think last time I checked the Blue Book was about $9900 and I was really thinking of selling (asking $9995, although I have added a bit of aftermarket stuff) it for a 1994. I also have 2 tone paint and runnning boards. Probably extra in the day as well as Husky floor mats all around. Those aren't cheap.

I'd say it is a good deal (if it is a 4x4), also keep in mind that if you aren't using the parents gas card, that 60+ miles will add up REALLY fast in Gas and cost of operation. But you can easily carry 5 paying customers and a trailer. You will love it.

If you want the v8, it will be only on 96+ and it should say v8 on the side by the fender. The v8 and sohc both produce about the same amount of hp. V8's are a little more rare, and usually are a little more money. I believe quite a bit of 97+ have sohc engines. The sohc also has 1 extra gear in the transmission and the transmission seems much more reliable in that and the v8 than the a4ld in the 4.0 ohv engine.
 






to correct you, the v8's have 5 more hp and about 50-60 lb feet more torque, which makes a BIG difference
 






Don't know if this has been said but with that much of a comute every day you'll be paying alot on gas. But i'd still get the Explorer, just get job to.

I agree with Paul. Explorers drink a lot of gas. I commute 30 miles back and forth from school now and about 40 miles to and back from work so I have to fill up every 4 days. That's everyday but still, it's a lot of gas.

I know I'll be flamed for this but here's my recommandation, find a '95-'97 Honda Accord EX 4-cylinder. It's faster than an Explorer and drinks way less fuel than the Explorer. When I drove my Accord for a couple of weeks a while back, I only had to fill up twice @ approximately $15. I know when I drive the Explorer for two weeks, I'd be filling up at least 3 times @ approximately $25.

I'm a big Explorer fan, but I'm with Billy. The Explorer will cost you big bucks driving that far everyday to school and back. Plus, I'm guessing you will never need the 4WD in Louisiana (has it EVER snowed there?). IMO, a used hatchback is the perfect college vehicle. That's what I had in school and here are the advantages: cheap to operate, usually boring (read: little chance of someone breaking in to steal the car or stereo), can carry 3-4 friends, can fold rear seat down and carry lots of stuff, and oh yeah, cheap to operate! Disadvantages are mainly that it isn't very cool or fun to drive (usually, but not always).

Go cheap now and save your $ for other things. There is plenty of time to get a cool Explorer when you have a high paying job after acing college! If you do go with the Explorer, take the advice above and have it checked out before you buy...it is money very well spent. And come back and visit this site a lot. There is a ton of useful info. here about owning/operating an Explorer.

I don't know about the Honda, there were 3 stollen from my school last semester, and I live in the middle of nowhere, the school is just outside of no where. I highly doubt that people would mess with an Ex over a Honda. I agree with the commuter aspects of Hondas and the like, but I feel that my Ranger is a far nicer vehicle, and it's just about the same as an Ex. Currently, my truck gets about 18-20 mpg if I take it easy, on back roads. Not sure about highway driving, don't do enough of it, but it's pretty good. My 4cyl. Ranger only got about 17mpg on back roads. THe Explorer has enough room to fit 3 people comfortably, along with a good amount of cargo, for long trips. I'd say take the Ford.
 






I got my explorer just after I started college. It's a 95, had 76,000 miles on it. I got it because I could lopad up and move all of my stuff to college in one trip, without needing to pull any trailers. My attitude was that, if it didn't fit in the truck, I didn't need it. If you are like most girls I know, this may not apply. I now drive my Explorer 50 miles a day to and from work and I need to fill up about once a week. I have had no problems to speak of with my Explorer (has 125,000 miles on it now). If you like the truck and it checks out to be mechanically sound, I say go for it!

BTW: I'm from Marerro, LA (westbank of NO) and have been through your part of the state many times. Where are you going to college???

As cool as Ex's are , they really , really LOVE gasoline.
Get a cheap ricer save your buck and get your self a real fancy Explorer for a gratuation gift.
 






Yeah I agree that it may not be the best college vehicle,
I'm currently going to Oregon State, I drive about 60 miles a day average, and spend $20 a time to fill it up. My budget is set at $160 a month. What ever you buy, make sure you know how much you'll be spending a month, and include some miles for leisure driving. That financial aid only goes so far a quarter/semester.

I think that's not a bad price at all for the mileage.......but I think you can get it for at least 7900 and talk them down some more if anything.

While the Ex is a totally cool vehicle they are very exspensive. They aren't fuel efficeint and are high maintenance. Especially the 4wd. Like Tim said get that tranny checked BEFORE you buy it. If the previous owner beat it it has either been replaced or will go on you. BUY A WARRANTY. you can get a warranty on any used car. Some companies offer a 3 year unlimited mile power train. I purchased a 36/36000 warranty from Gaurdian for my 1996. They have put about $3,700 into my truck so far. And my steering rack is shot along with my abs sensors and probobly the auto hubs while there in there. Ex's are exspensive but if $$$ isn't tight I belive them to be one of the best SUV's around. Its the best of the American SUVS.
