94 XLT bought new- window motor, fuel gauge, A/C leaks, thermostat, needed bushings when sold at 102K

99 XLT V8 bought new- IAC valve and wiper switch in warranty, now at 42K

Dad's 96 XLT V8 bought new- Front wheel bearing at around 35K

Neighbor's 98 XLT SOHC bought new- clunk when put in gear, radio face and 6disk changer died, negotiating w/dealer and or extended warranty to fix.

1996 XLT... it's really been great and I'm running with more than 100k on it now, but it seems that it takes a while to engage when put in reverse. Anybody else with this problem, or know of any recalls with the transmission???

I just kinda had that problem. I was out fourwheeling in the mud, and my reverse slowly went out. I took it to the shop and they said there was a clog somewhere and it wasn't getting tranny fluid to the reverse clutches. It didn't cost me anything because it was still under warranty from when I got a new one last year, but they had to take the whole tranny apart.

97 4dr xlt
seat belts went bad 3 of them either dont buckel or wont un buckel(had to craw out of it) got that fixed
rear doors wont open fro mthe inside
steering pump

'96 XLT from a couple posts up

that's one thing I forgot in mine, my back left door has now become impossible to open from the inside, and the handle just kinda sticks out.

anyone know how to fix the stupid rear wiper?

Are there any recalls on the 92 XLT?

Does anyone know where this thread started? It has turned into like 10 different threads! Can we kill this one and start with individual threads? Please

rear wiper fix-

for anyone with late model x's who's rear wiper doesn't fully wipe, it's easy to fix. take 2 pairs of big pliers with long handles for leverage, and line their teeth with towels so as not to scratch paint. about 2 inches behind where your wiper attatches to the wiper arm, there is a small kink in the arm- use the pliers to bend this kink more drastically. be careful to do it small amounts and test, because if you bend it too much the wiper arm won't slide back into it's receptacle. but, done properly- this will easily fix the wiper problem.

Rear wiper does not fully sweep glass. As long as I tighten the rear wiper arm lock nut every once in a while, it is okay.

Rattle in the dash at base of the windshield, particularly in cold weather. As long as I crank the defroster at full heat in the morning, it quiets down a little.

2000 XLT here, same two problems.

Other than that, the only thing is my gas gauge. The thing can go from half full to 3/4s full just by heading up a small incline. It bugs but its nothing really.

2001 XLT 5.0

Purchased with 18K miles, since then put on 10K miles. When I bought it, I took it in the next day with a laundry list of things wrong.

Replaced both front window motors.
Replaced both front rotors.
Power driver's seat rocks (still does, I'm going to try again).
Passengar rear door didn't unlock with automatic locks when the truck was running.
Dome lights didn't come on when the truck was running.
Front wiper motor/switch replaced. (Lol, I went in and said, do I have moisture sensing wipers? They seem to go on and off all by themselves.)

To be fixed at 30K

Transmission at low speeds - when the engine is punched, seems to 'bump' downshift. Not happy with this as I don't want to pay for a new tranny after warranty.
Power driver's seat still rocks.
Winshield outside seals are way messed up.
Rear A/C, Heat motor - when on high, my gosh - my mirror vibrates it so bad :)
Outside mirror rattles at speeds.

That's it :)

Great idea!

Ry.

Things that have gone wrong...

  1. Every Oxygen sensor has gone bad at one time or the other.
  2. Auto Hubs died while on a soft sandy beach. Replaced with Warn Manuals...
  3. The "dang" Heat Shield rattle from hell. Pulled it off myself. Funny thing is I heard the rattle on another explorer this past weekend and chuckled to myself.
  4. Brakes (all around)
  5. The sag on the Door Hinges on both driver and passenger doors. Replaced and now fine.
  6. The A/C seems to not be cold when I checked it 2 weeks ago. I'm gonna have it looked at.
Seriously, all in all, this is all little stuff...
    1. No rust.Still shines close to new.
    2. Drives beautifully
    3. No hint of tranny issues
    4. Still have the original battery
The truck has been in the family since it's first mile, here's the things repaired/replaced over it's currently 209,000 mile tenature as the main family truck (it's now my main truck and musical equiptment hauler)...

45,000 Miles

140,000 Miles
Sunroof Leaks, carpeted cover under dashboard on passenger side is coming loose.

142,000 Miles
I acidentally broke the Armwrest pivot (that seems to be common in all early X s)

150,000 Miles
Replaced/Repaired Manual Transmission, Lock on ignition does not work.

160,000 Miles
Oil Pump sensor went wacko (put on the oil warning light when nothing is wrong at random times)

Shifter Handler comes off in hand when changing gears (usually first to second).

Plus we had the Recalls on the Sunroof, the rear tailgate, and the Firestone does not apply, since first tire replacement brands were swapped.

Probably. They've all been recalled thousands of times.

But actually, go to the NHTSA site and look on the menu on the left side of the page and you'll find "Recalls". You can then search their database for like any type of car imaginable, and it'll tell you all the times it's been recalled and why.

95 XLT 4x4:
I bought mine used slightly over 2 years ago with 84,000 on it...since then:

-Transfer Case Rebuilt
-New Shocks, Brakes (all wheels, normal wear/tear)
-Front Pinion seal repair x 2.
-Both rear power window motors had gone bad.
-Windshield washer motors wouldn't work, due to bad wiring at the harness through the firewall.
Rack and Pinion System, including the power steering pump.
-IAC Sensor replaced.
Fuel Pump replacement due to faulty fuel filter.

Much was covered under my warranty (used car) through the warranty company, but heck, I almost have a new truck now..the engine runs very well!
:D :D

Warped Rotors

This is the fith time in 4 years I have had warped rotors. I now have 2 sets of rotors, so I can have one turned while I am driving my Explorer. The last repair I changed the slides, and made sure they were lubed and replaced the calipers. Seven months later the pulse is back. If I did not have a couple sets of rotors I would try some cryo treated rotors (frozenrotors.com).
