Common problems?

I am going to look at a 94 XLT tomarrow, what are some "known issues"with Explorers... headgasket problems? axle problems? fish smell?

It really depends on where/how it was driven and how it was taken care of..

The more common issues are (in no particular order)
Bad transmision.. The a4ld (auto tranny) seems to die somewhere between 80k and 200k.. rebuild is usually over 1k.
Blow front hubs: replacement autos are expensive.. a conversion to manual warn hubs is <$200
Blown Radium Arm bushings.. if they are bad enough the cross memoer may be bad.. Cross member is $100 or so.. labor to install can be cheap or somewhat expensive depending on if the rivots have already been taken out
Broken Center console (the center console armrest bracket is plastic from the factory)
Broken door handle (inside handle.. it is plastic)

Those are the ones right off the top of my head..
