I have the service center computer in the console of my truck and was wondering how it measures the % life of oil. I am switching over to Amsoil 5W30 and that supposidly lasts for 25,000 miles. Is the oil calculated based on the mileage or does it actually calculate the life of the oil??

I am just wondering if the sythetic oil will register in my computer for ~25,000 miles. Can anybody help me out?

Your computer is based on 7,500-mile interval. If that's the case, you should change your oil filter every 5,000 miles so I would set it at 80%. When the computer tells you to change the oil, just change the filter.

This was a response from a Ford Engineer that my dad works with:

"The engine computer measures engine run time and oil temperature to determine oil life."

Has anybody had any problems with this oil being too thin. One of my dad's colleagues said his engine light was on because it was slippin. I'm not sure if he was using Amsoil 5w30 or what. Any comments???

Hmmm

¿How much would it be to add that to my truck? I test drove an x that had it. Seemed really neat. Wouldn't mind having one in mine. Hey, very smart move changing the oil (by that I mean using Amsiol) Get it CHANGING the oil.

Here's what I got from the service manual:

Oil Life Warning (CHANGE OIL SOON or OIL CHANGE REQUIRED)

One of these warning messages is displayed when the engine oil life remaining is five percent or less.

- When oil life left is between five percent and zero percent, the "CHANGE OIL SOON" message will be displayed.

- When oil life left reaches zero percent, the "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message will be displayed.

The message center indicator will indicate the percent of oil life left during System Check. This percentage is based on the driver's driving history and the time since the last oil change. In order to ensure accurate oil life left indications, the driver should only perform the OIL CHANGE RESET procedure, as described in the Owner Guide, after an oil change.

To calculate the percentage of oil life left, the oil life feature uses:

-- The oil temperature sensor input

-- The tachometer input from the ignition control module (ICM) (12K072) (ICM)

-- The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) input and

-- Clock time (maintained internally by the message center)

- The oil life will decrease from 100 percent to 0 percent in no more than 8,000 km (5,000 miles) or 6 months. It will reach zero percent sooner under different driving conditions.

- The percentage of oil life left is the second display in the system check sequence.

- When oil life left is between five percent and zero percent, the "CHANGE OIL SOON" message will be displayed.

- When oil life left reaches zero percent, the "OIL CHANGE REQUIRED" message will be displayed.

I guess it's based on a 5,000-mile interval. But I set mine at 80% and I always change my oil at around 5000 miles so I dont' know.

It's a good feature. But installing takes a long time! Do a search. BIG COUNTRY did this mod and he said he took more than 20 hours of studying, gathering, organizing and splicing the wires to get it to work like it's suppose to.
