i have a 94 explorer xlt with 4x4 but it does not activate what so ever. i had an adventure underneath today and i noticed there was a hose to top of the t-case but it stopped less than a foot up from there. and at my front differential there is also a hose that ends at about a foot. are they supposed to be connected somehow or no and if so could anyone help with diagnosis with how i could get it to start working cuz it gets power to the elec shift but when i hit the button it doesnt do jack, so help anyone?? thanks

Those hoses are nothing more than breather tubes, your rear diff has one too. You unplugged your shift motor, and found power at the plug? Then you found your problem, the shift motor. Tap it and see if it breaks free.

no at the electric switch inside the truck, i didnt try power at the shift motor yet how would i go about doing that??

checked that out before thanks!

You most likely have to take the shift motor off and put a new bushing on the stepper gear. I just went to my local hardware store and bought some vinyl tubing that fit, then cut it to fit the little stopper.

If the bushing breaks (Which it does after 20+ years) the motor will spin too far, then it won't know where it is so it doesn't react.

This thread will help with that http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=123542

IF that doesn't fix it, it probably needed it anyways, so it won't hurt.

OR you can buy a new one http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=589963&cc=1119619&jnid=539&jpid=1

BUT it's WAY cheaper to do it yourself!

Good luck! :D

is there any way there is a manual conversion to avoid all this bs? haha

and could i leave my 4wd on since i have manual locking hubs or will that burn up the t-case?

I think if you go manual, you have to pull a manual t-case out of an Explorer that has one, (Maybe just the linkage, I'm not sure.) Then you would have to pull back your carpet and grind a hole in the floor to put the shifter.

Or you could get a shifster! www.theshiftster.com

Then you have to crawl under your truck every time you want 4x4. Just do it before you need it and it will never fail you. Then just keep your hubs unlocked until you do need 4x4. (While offroading, or in snow)

I would not recommend keeping it in 4x4 with the hubs unlocked, all the time. It will put a lot of wear on parts that are not made to work like that and it would kill your gas mileage.

Fixing the shift motor and stuff is really easy. And it's really nice once you have it working.

ok cool thanks for the advice!!
