i have a 1993 ford explorer xlt, 4 door, auto tranny

got the idea from someone posting about a ranger, but didn't' want to hijack his thread.

what type of scanner would i use? is there a scanner i can use?

and where does it plug in? under hood? under dash?

i'm just trying to see if mine has the ability to put out real time engine info, cause i'd like to buy one of those dash scanners that gives real time information while driving... just to keep an eye on things.

thanks.

The scanners are mostly for OBDII vehicles, your 93 is ODBI . They plug in under the the steering wheel usually. An OBDI sysytem puts out some real time info, but not as much as an OBDII vehicle that has a lot more sensors, electronic transmission, sensors in the tranfer case, and ABS.

The EEC-IV connector is under the hood. On my '92 it's on the passenger fenderwell, just aft of the air filter housing/power distribution box. If it hasn't been used in a while, it may be tucked down under the other wires and stuff there.

As I noted in another recent post, you may or may not be able to access real time parameters on your '93; I've never tried. You might review Glacier's "primer on code readers and scanners" post, where he demonstrates the use of a scanner on a '93 or '94 Escort (but I don't remember for sure what vehicle it was, but it was definitely EEC-IV).
