I have 4.10 open and I'm thinking of upgrading to a limited slip. Ford racing sells a nice carbon fiber carrier for the Mustangs and it fits any 31 spline.

I'm wondering if I can get away swapping the ring gear and just setting backlash? Seems you just need the ABS ring (looks reasonable to tap off, but the manual says to get new) and 2 bearings pressed on.

The store selling it told me lots of mustang guys just pop it in, fill with 75W140 synthetic and race with it, no problems.

I don't want to mess with the pinion if I don't have to.

Ring and Pinion are made as a match set.

Sure you can just change the ring gear. Hope you like a rear end that will howl like crazy.

Setting up a rear end is not as easy as it sounds.

Best option is to:

A) Find a used 4:10 complete and take your chances
or
B) Rebuild yours with want you want complete from scratch.

Yes, I agree, the R and P set should be married for life.

I was planning on swapping the ring gear I currently have from the open to the new trac-lok carrier. Seems it should be a drop in. Pinon depth can't really change - maybe move a shim from side to side to fix backlash. From what I read this seems to work - I know if you change the ratio with new gears then it has to be done from scratch. Ideally it should be built from scratch but a carrier swap may(or may not) be that extensive. I talked to a transmission place and he said 99% of the time you should be fine.

Could work that way but moving side to side will also change your running pattern of the gears thus causing you to run shallow or deep inside the ring gear.

My luck says I'll be in the 1%....

You are fine doing like you said in your first post.

The only reason to remove the pinion would be to see if the bearing races still look good or to replace the pinion seal.

Other then that just install your tone ring and ring gear I would use new carrier bearings and try the factory shims first. Most times if you are replacing a ford unit with a ford unit your factory shims will work fine.

I have done over 20 8.8 rears and this is what I have found to be true.

I did this in my explorer went from open to LSD used factory shims works great don't forget your friction modifier
