I have a '98 explorer 4dr 4wd. The 4wd has worked fine, but today I was in some mud, and in 4-low I noticed the rear wheels spinning, and the front wheels weren't turning at all. From my understanding of the Control-Trac system, in 4wd (especially 4-low) all the wheels should be turning together. Could this be a worn electric clutch in the transfer case?

More then likely, you're front differential is open. based on what you've posted, i would say that the front passenger tire was spinning and you just couldn't see it. If 4wd works, just not 4low. i would assume there would be a problem with the planetary gears. (not sure if that is a possiblity, just know that that's how 4 low is engaged). So firstly, are you positive neither front wheel was spinning or you were just gauging off the drivers side?

Just looking at the front drivers side wheel. After throwing a little mud with the rear wheels, the front wheels (drivers side at least) finally did spin and got me up the hill. You might have hit it on the head about the differentail being open.
