Hey everyone man i got a 95 ford explorer with that control trac 4x4 it rots me so much that drive shaft always goin in and out i was wondering if ne one could tell me exactly how it works and can i change it out with a transfercase out of a 91 explorer or a mazda b4000 or a ranger any held would be great thanks.

Control trac on a 4wd vechicle means that when the main drive wheels (rear wheels on an explorer) start to slip, sensors see that signal and tell the GEM (module that controls the 4wd in our explorers) to spin the front wheels until the rear wheels gain traction again and you are on your way.

You can have your GEM reflashed by your local ford dealership and that may help your problem. I had mine done back in the day and it did help me and my 97 sounds like it was doing what yours is, constantly kicking in and out.

But as for putting in a manual transfer case, no biggy. That actually bolt right up in place of you electronic shift case. I can't remember if i had a light stay on in the dash or not, but i know you'll not have your 4x4 lights come on when you pull that lever back to get it in 4wd. There are alot of people that have switch from the auto case to a manual, search for BW1354 That's the manual case that you'll need.

By the way, welcome to the site!
