On a long road trip this weekend, I got a bit too enthusiastic with my stereo and managed to cook the factory subwoofer in my 94 Limited. Before I pull it out of there, can anyone tell me what size it is, both physical dimensions and wattage/ohms, and what would be a good replacement? I want to continue using the factory amp to drive it.

Thanks!

The factory sub should be a 6.5", 4ohm driver that handles 65-85W or so.

JL Audio makes a replacement 6.5" sub, the 6W0, that goes in with little or no modification, and has similar low power specs so it'll work right with the factory amp. There are also a few low-quality 6.5" subs available, you can find these on ebay or at gimmicky mobile audio shops, they get the job done but have really poor frequency response, almost like a midrange driver.

I believe some members have successfully modified their factory boxes to accept an 8" sub since it's a more common size. Theres a few models that handle 120W RMS, which should work fine with the factory amp.

I just modded a factory JBL box to hold an 8" Goldwood GW-8PC-30-4 sub for my "Budget Bass" project. I figured out how much I needed to enlarge the hole. Drilled holes side by side around the perimeter, and used the drill bit to chew out between the holes. After drilling around a couple inches, I would take Vice-Grips and break a piece off.

I plan to post pics after completion of my project.

I may do the same thing, although I think I would use a sheet metal nibbler rather than go through the time and effort of drilling holes. Pneumatic ones can be had for $30 or less ( http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=46061 ) and hand-operated ones for less than $20.

You could probably do the same thing in a couple of minutes with a sawzall and a short metal blade.

ebay has an insert that allows a 10 inch sub to fit, it's whole new panel, i'm thinking of buying it, my factory sub burned up as well, for the time being i have a 10 inch 500w lightning audio sub I hooked up to the factory amp, I was amzed by how it sounds, does anyone know how many amp the factory jbl amp pumps out?

I thought about running to Harbor Freight for some sort of tool to make quick work, but I had the drill and bits, so that is what I used. I knew it would work, with a bit of time. I have a Dremel, but I thought that would take even longer. I jigsaw was my only other option, but I could not figure out how to insert the blade

it came out of a 97, will fit 91-2001. 10 inch subs will cost you whatever your willing to pay for them, how much bass are you looking for, if your on a limited budget you can get a cheap 10 inch at walmart or pepboys but i'm not the expert when it comes to price VS qaulity, anyone know a good qaulity 10 inch sub that wont empty your wallet?

And has the same ohms etc as the stock. Or will the stock amp work with a bigger better speaker??? Audio gurus????

The Q-forms 10-inch box on ebay is a pretty good deal. You could throw the basic Pioneer 120W (it says 600W max but really its 120W RMS) 10" wal-mart sub ($50) in there. It's single voice coil, 4 ohms. The factory JBL amp puts out under 100W, something like ~85W, so it will push the Pioneer just fine. A 10" would put out lots more bass for those that want it, but throwing a replacement 6.5" in would be a heck of a lot less work, and possibly money.

Thanks Anime4x4, thats good info.

In my 96 Limited someone replaced the factory sub with a Rockford 6.5 before I got it. sounds good for a factory system. But am planning a system in it though.

Any tips on removing the old one?

Any tips on removing the old one?

Looked closer and there are little clips in there, whats the secret. I tried pushing down on them but that didn't seem to help. Broke to clips don't want to break any more if I don't have to.

I didnt want to brake the clips on my sub panel so i just pryed out the screen, plenty of room to take sub out that way.

Not a bad idea. Then you could access the plastic clips that hold the grill on also.

If you want, I can post pics of what the back of the speaker grill panel looks like. Although, all my tabs are broken off. I can post a pic of the plastic clips that hold the grill panel in place also. I can post a pic of just the metal grill also. PM me if you want to see something. I can take pics tomorrow.
