I need a second opinion. I just recently purchased a 94 explorer from a friend of mine.
After driving around for a bit I noticed that the temp gauge will barely move of off the bottom, and I wasn’t getting any heat in the truck (well very little) I make the assumption bad thermostat and its stuck open. So I proceed to start taking the truck apart to get the thermostat out, (what a pain in the but who the hell makes a thermostat that hard to get to, Oh well that’s a different thread) I get the thermostat out and notice that it is closed and wait what is all this brown goop and powder looking stuff yep you guessed it Barrs leak. So I drain the rest of the antifreeze and take the old and the new thermostat in to the kitchen to do some cooking. I have now verified that my old thermostat works almost exactly the way the new one does. Ok so the problem wasn’t my thermostat at all.
This is the part where I need the second opinion.
My guess is that the Barrs leak was used to stop a leaky heater core and that’s why I have no heat. I know my buddy had this truck for two years and he is not the one who put the Barrs leak in. If the Barrs leak was used for say a blown head gasket would it of held for two years? I see no signs of a blown head gasket, oil looks good, ( I just changed it two days ago) water looked pretty good except for the Barrs leak and it doesn’t use any water or oil and runs great.
So what do you think? What are the odds of me having a Barrs leak plugged up heater core, and a bad temperature sensor .
