cooling engine by opening hood?

Tbomb have you noticed there is no lights on the doors (half red reflector half light). I guess the puddle lights replaced the door lights. As for the glovebox, they removed the inside light AND removed the friggen lock. The lock is the one that makes me the most irrate.

OK enough steam has been released.

yeah. i dont really care about the door lights, cuz i like the puddle lamps, and i dont really put much in my glove box. and what ryan said makes a lot of sense, but, ya know, the price keeps going up every year, and they keep taking away more features; i guess fords philosophy is, "less is less, but we'll still charge more."

Its called CAPTIOLISM. Remember Ford is in business to make a orofit and has to answers to its stockholders,

My Ford stock could sure use a boost these days.

I don't know when they took away the lock on the glovebox but it was before '97 since mine doesn't have one. I wouldn't mind having one though. The removal of various courtesy lights in '98 was so that Ford could keep the base price of the Explorer the same as '97. The big marketing thing by Ford when the '98s were released was that you could buy a '98 at '97 prices. They didn't advertise the fact that they took things away to keep the price the same.

They must have removed the glovebox lock mid 97 since my bosses 97 XLT 4x4 has the lock.

Could be, mine was made 3/97.

heh, thanks. nice to know the almighty dollar is more important to large corporations than producing quality products or, at least, giving the customer what he/she wants; but i guess thats just common knowledge anymore.

a hood light is very useful in my opinion i couldnt live without one :-)

Correct me if I'm wrong but dont car companies remove features for a year or two and then bring them back and say it is a new feature. I was told that the under-hood light was removed in 1998 and was brought back and advertised as one of the new things.

I have an under hood light, a glove box light, a lock on the glove box, and the lights/reflectors on the insides of the doors. I feel special now.

Yes, Ford especially is guilty of that. It is kind of like a never ending cycle. They slowly start taking things off so the price doesn't go up too much each year. A few years later, they start adding them back and claim it is a new feature. I don't know if that is due to deceptive marketing or if they just get too many complaints from customers that remember having the features on their older vehicles and now they don't.

re: cooling engine by opening hood

Hi guys
Thank you for the welcome, Bill, Ray, and sink.
And thank you all for your thoughts in response to my question about opening the hood to cool the engine.
It has given me a good perspective on how to take care of the Explorer. I appreciate all the points you made, and I am not struggling with this "issure" anymore, since you all have indicated it will do no harm, though hood pistons will wear out faster. My friend tries pretty hard. Your experiences and knowledge make this site a real good resource.
Thanks again.
janie
