There are two types of these "lighter" receptacles, the cigar lighter receptacles and the power point receptacles. Generally speaking, generally I said, the cigar lighter receptacles stay "hot" all the time and the power point receptacles are switched. Do you have the short console or the full length one that goes all the way to the dash? The one on the radio bezel is the cigar lighter. The one on the side of the high series console or beside the ash tray on short console models is the power point.

cigar lighter

well i guess i have the cigar lighter, i just have to be careful and to make sure i unplug my power charger when i shut the car down. at least you helped me figure it out .You guys have been very helpful. until next time (hopefully not ) thanks

Either way, you should have both the cigar lighter and power point. Which console do you have?

console

my console is the full one goes from the back to the front under the dash,

Then your dash receptacle is the cigarette lighter and the power point is on the passenger side of the console.
