What would be the expected price for a new engine for a 93 explorer. I had a problem recently where i had a piston that cracked and i found a local ase cert. mechanic on craigslist that runs a mobile mechanic bushiness. He told me that with the cost of labor and whats involved with replacing one piston its cheaper to get a new engine. Well I want a new engine anyway the explorer that I have has close to 200,000 on it and has problems with vacuum and stuff like that. But he told me that hes able to find an engine here in town that's new for like $810. I was like cool and all but then started to think that doesn't sound right. Have anyone had an engine replaced where the new engine cost $800. I just dont want to get the engine and then find out its used or what ever and have a new set of headaches to worry about. What should I do?

I've gotten engines for my other vehicles for 400-600. 800 sounds good, but ask what he knows about it. He may have a 4l sitting around, or he knows of one that just got wrecked. Ask what he knows about it. If it's a rebuilt engine, and you trust him, go for it.

Is it new new or is it a used engine. Never heard of a new engine for $800. Need to do more homework

For $800 it can't be new unless it is as hot as burnin rubber! That is a good price on a motor if in good condition with low miles though. You can look at close to $2000 for some of the "new" engines so be wary of any "deal." Check out Jasper engines and you'll see how pricey they can become.
If your friend is reputable and will stand behind his work, the 800 motor might work good for you.

Thanks

Thanks for all of your help, I think that your all right about it being a used one but my old one is in horrible condition so I guess $800 would be great for one with low miles i will talk to the mechanic before paying for the engine.
