02 Eddie Bauer Explorer
I just bought an 02 eddie bauer Explorer and I am still trying to get used to all the different things on it. One thing that I dont understand is that when I start to drive off the doors lock (which I understand) but when I stop and turn it off and put it in park the back doors dont unlock. This is a pain to always have to hit the unlock to get my son out of the truck. My Toyota Camry doesnt do this so I was just wondering if this is just a "feature" on the Ford. This may be a dumb question but any answers would be appreciated. Thanks!

I thought that once you put the truck in park and shut it off, it unlocks?

Sounds like the child proof locking mechanism is engaged.

Yes it's considered a "safety feature" in particular. Some vehicles do unlock after the vehicle has been shut off but a large number do not. My explorer doesn't unlock after shutoff and my wife's Bmw doesn't either so no big. One of those things just got to get used to. Sorry I'm sure u were hoping there was a trick or something to fix it but it's doing what it's suppose to do.

i do have those switched over but I thought that only prevented the doors from being opened from the inside...not the outside...and I thought the same that once I put it in park, and turned it off the doors should unlock...not the case so far...i did see in the message center that you can turn off the auto lock feature...but nothing about it unlocking once stopped...just thought that was a given

Your right about the child lock it just keeps from opening from the inside. Mine doesn't unlock after and I don't think any of the 2nd gens do for that matter. Not sure about newer models but urs isn't going to unlock on it's own. I'm not sure about a mod to fix it but I'm used to it.

Uhmmm, but my second gen does unlock the doors when I shut it off.

yeah my 02 limited doesn`t unlock either my 03 f150 supercrew was the same way never unlocked, so I disengaged the autolocks, I have been meaning to do the same too the explorer

On my 05 EB and my wifes 03 XLT the locks engage when in drive and disengage when we push the button. Annoying? Yes. It took some getting used to after 2 GM's that auto locked and unlocked.

Ya know you can fix it so the doors don't lock right? You use the keyfob to change the settings. I'll see if I can find the directions.

Autolock
The autolock feature will lock all the doors, liftgate and liftgate window
when:
• all the doors, the liftgate and liftgate window are closed,
• the ignition is in the 3 (ON) position,
• you shift into any gear putting the vehicle in motion, and
• the brake pedal is released and the vehicle attains a speed greater
than 8 km/h (5 mph).
The autolock feature repeats when:
• any door, liftgate or liftgate window is opened then closed while the
ignition is in the 3 (ON) position, and
• you put the vehicle in motion by releasing the brake pedal and the
vehicle attains a speed greater than 8 km/h (5 mph).
Deactivating/activating autolock
Your vehicle comes with the autolock feature activated. There are four
methods to enable/disable this feature: One is through your dealer, the
second with a power door unlock/lock sequence, the third with the
keypad, and the fourth by using the message center (if equipped).
Before following the activation or deactivation procedures, make sure
that the anti-theft system is not armed, ignition is off, and all vehicle
doors, liftgate and liftgate window are closed.
Power door unlock/lock procedure
You must complete steps 1-5 within
30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the
procedure needs to be repeated,
you must wait 30 seconds.
1. Turn the ignition to the 3 (ON)
position.
2. Press the power door unlock
control three times.

3. Turn the ignition from the 3 (ON) to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to the 3 (ON) position. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will
chirp once if autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long
chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to the 1 (OFF/LOCK) position. The horn will chirp
once to confirm the procedure is complete.

^ that's from the 04 manual BTW

Muzzy, you posted the instructions at the same time I was typing them up! It looks like yours are the same as the '02. :salute:

Edit: Sorry, looks like there is a slight difference from the '02 manual:

1. Turn the ignition key to ON
2. Press the UNLOCK button 3 times
3. Turn the ignition key to OFF
4. Press the UNLOCK button 3 times
5. Turn the ignition key to ON, within 5 seconds press the LOCK button 1 time
Pressing the UNLOCK/LOCK button again will toggle the Autolock/Relock states.
6. Turn the ignition key to OFF to exit programming

LOL! Either way this just show's one thing - read your manuals!!

I have read the manual...I just didnt want to turn off the auto-lock feature (which I can do through my message center) because of having a little kid in the back and a pregnant wife in the front. I guess it just another security blanket thing of knowing the doors are locked when we stop at an intersection or in an unsure part of town. Thanks for all the insight though...I just wondered why my vehicle wouldnt unlock when put back into park. I guess its just a feature I'm gonna have to get used to.

on my '04 they lock automatically like everyone else but when you pull the front door handle it unlocks as the lever moves and you can open the door, no button press. Rear doesn't do that. . i have to hit the fob or front door switch to open the rear even with the child lock on/off. i've just gotten used to it, i just hit the door switch wait till everyone gets out then hit 7/8 on the keypad, or use the fob. Its kinda of a pain.

jrford, my '02 is the same way. I've only owned it since February but I guess I'm used to it. :salute:

i was gonna say... if i lock myself into my car (manual locks... i don't have that cool auto-lock feature) all i have to do is pull the handle... so even with the auto lock on, you shouldn't have to unlock the door before you get out...

edit: i didn't read carefully and just realized that its getting your son out of the back seat that you were talking about... i'd rather have to let him out every time than know he could get himself out while you're driving. :)
