Could be an emergency

I am hoping you can help me in spite of my admitted ignorance in the arena of automobiles. I own a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT with 55,000 miles. I recently began noticing a "clanking" noise from the front end and upon inspection, I noticed a rod hanging down near the inside of the front, passenger side tire. The rod appears to be secured at the bottom end but broken at the top(there is an identical rod near the front, driver side tire that is not hanging down but is secured). At the top of the rod, there is a black rubber piece that looks like it is missing a fastener and the bottom of the rod has a nut threaded on it. The length of the bar is 10-12 inches and looks like it connects the framerail and the upper control arm? but I'm not sure of these terms. I think this is a pretty serious safety hazard and I need to service this vehicle immediately. I could sure use your help figuring out what this part might be and possibly an idea as to what kind of labor/parts costs are involved in fixing it. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a 96, I have 91 and have no idea what you're talkin about, but I'm pretty sure you have your warranty still, so you could always take it to the dealer and have it serviced there.

sounds like your torsion bar has come loose. This is SERIOUS if it has. Make sure you take it straight to a garage and have it checked out.
