From the first day I bought my 96 Explorer I have experienced an irregular starting problem. I will turn the key over and the engine being’s to turn over and then it’s as if the starter will disengage and spin freely. I try to start again and some times the starter will grab and other times it will turn freely with out turning over the engine.

Any idea what could be going on here?

Sounds like a possible dead spot on the starter.

Check and make sure all the connections from the battery going to the starter are clean and making good connections. If the problem is still there is sounds like the teeth on the starter pinion may be chewed up or isn't engaging properly. It also could be a bad starter relay Check the voltage coming out of the relay.

thanks for the info. When I have some time I will inspect the starter. What voltage am i looking for at the relay?

Could be the gear on the starter or possible that some of the flywheel's teeth are getting worn and the starter isn't always catching it right.
