Ok today I moved my truck for the first time since a nice snow fall here, so i had quite a bit of snow to drive over to get out of my spot. Well I put it in 4LO to avoid getting stuck and when I did I got a pretty big clunk (right after I put it in 4lo)...is this normal ? or should I start worrying?
Next when parking it again, i had to go thru some deep snow, so i started out in 4hi then went to 4lo and did gun it a bit so could i have damaged anything. My ABS light also came on after a bit of spinning, but this also happened in my blazer once while i was stuck and after driving it for a bit the light went off. Could it be the same thing here? Light on due to the wheels spinning maybe at different rates?

First: make sure you're always in Neutral while switching in and out of 4 LO. Check your manual, but i think you can be in eithe Park or Drive and going under 5mph do switch in 4HI.

Second: That clunk is not abnormal. Just means you havent used the gear in a while.. If you use 4Lo more often the noise will quiet down a little, but never go away.

Thrid: Dont use 4LO in snow and ice. Low = Low gear = lots of torque = spinning tires= no moving... understand? 4Hi is plenty sufficient to get you moving, and if 4 HI doesnt work, all 4 LO is going to do is dig you in...

4LOW= maybe for towing someone or something up an incline or someone thats stuck. Pulling things very very slowly. And other situations that everyday drivers dont usually encounter.

sounds good, anyone have an idea on the ABS light?

I don't know about not using 4LO on snow. I got stuck once on 2 feet of snow and couldn't get out of it from 4HI. Rocked it back and forth and all. Couldn't get out until I switch it to 4LO. Then I got out like nothing. I think 4LO was design for just that kind of situation.

The only time I use 4low in when I need lots of power or torque with very little wheelspin. I never use it in the snow or on any slippery flat surface, thats what 4hi is for. If I need to climb a steep incline off-road and I dont want to be spinning the whole way up or I nned to get over some big rocks, I use 4low.

Only time I really used 4lo is when I needed some torque to pull me out. This ABS light has me a bit worried tho.

is the ground still slippery? hop in your car, go 20 mph and slam on the brakes and see if your abs kicks in, if it does and that lights not still on they everythings ok.

The abs system just consists of a sensor in each hub and thats linked into the computer, so its possible that if you had tires spinning and gripping that the computer got confused and threw a code.

That was my thoughts as well, I'll check it out tomorrow or soon. Truck is parked for a good 5 days out of the week. Just wanted to make sure that was a possibility. oh and I HATE NOT HAVING A LOCKER !!!!

The 4 wheel low clunk is because of the changing of gears.
