Alright, First off.. 92 4 door xlt 4x4 4.0 v6 automatic.

1. Theres a sticker that says the vehicle is equiped with a remote starting device (underneath the hood). Well, I have no such device on my keyring when I bought it.. How would I aquire one, and where can I look to find out what I need?

2. Fuel gauge doesnt work, Reads full ALL the time, I pulled the sending unit, everything appears to be good, Checked the tank connections and other connections along the harness, Everything appears to be fine. All fuses in the box underneath the dash are good. Needle isnt stuck, When I start it, It will go past full, When i shut it off, it will go back to full.

3. Got some annoying vibrations happening when I'm on the highway, Sometimes its while im on the gas, Othertimes its when I let off the gas and coast,.. Where do I start?

4. Rear anti-lock light is on in the dashboard.. What shall I do about that? Brakes work fine, Never had a problem. Fluid is fine.

5. Check engine light comes on after about 5 minutes of running.. This thing runs like a top, I dont know what the problem could be.

6. When I shift into drive, theres a "CLUNK" from underneath. It drives fine, and the transmission is perfect.. Just that noise when I first shift into drive. Possibly a bad u-joint or someshit? Tips? What to look for?

7. Rear windshield wiper has a mind of its own, If you turn it on it just sits in place and goes "clack clack clack clack clack" If you turn the wiper by hand a little bit it will catch and do maybe 2 cycles, then start clacking again.

8. Only the HIGH setting will work on my heater control.. The fan control that is, the knob you turn to adjust how hard the air blows.. the first couple clicks do nothing, but once you get to the highest setting it turns on and works perfect.. And also, When you "Push for AC" it does nothing, the little light comes on, but no air is blown at all. Are these units known for breaking? bad linkage or something?

9. I have some oil coming out of my rearend differential.. Bad gasket? Hard to replace?

10. My rocker panels are shot, the rest of the body is solid.. I see jcwhitney offers replacement panels.. Does anyone have any experience with them?

Thanks all, Trying to get this back in tip-top shape.

Alright MAn i got some experience with some of your problems, I ahve a 91.

3. Your vibrations could be a number of things, form U joints, loose bolts, or even a shot bearing, but you say highway speeeds which leads me to believe that it is most liley and ismply a tire weight, you should have them all balanced, Im also goiong to assume to vibration is coming fomr the whole car and not the steering wheel, if so, you may have a issue with your barke rotors.

5. If your enigne runs fine, it could ismply be the IAT sensor, or Intake Air Tempeture Sensor, check the conneciton and ensure it is in proper order.

6. This clunk is a "normal" noise i guess you could say, i just had my trans rebuilt by a Master Certified Aamco technician, mine does the same thing, i wouldn't worry about it too much.

8. If your fan control only works on high setting, then its is more than likley a corroded terminal on the wheel itself, as for the motor, check the blower motor connection, located just next to the evaporator core, and heater core hoses, on the passenger side. As for the AC, check the conneciton on the evaporator canniter, also on the passenger side, it will ahve 2 silver lines going to it, ensure the connection between the plug and terminal is tight and corrosion free.

9. If gear oil is leaking, DO NOT DRIVE IT, ensure there is oil in the differential before dirivng it, sadly on the 8.8 the filler is on top of the differnential, unbolt the cover, and buy some "black rtv sealent" form a local pep boys or advanced, lay a generous size bead and re install the cover, in order to refill with fluid you may have ot buy a special pump to get it in there, or you will have to jack up the body of the vehicle whilst leaving the tired on the ground.

10. Rust is a common issue with first gen X's try to go to Dead Link Removed they have a full selection of all the parts nessicairy to fix the common rust spots on early X's/

Sry i can't be of any help on your other issues, hope you get evrything fixe,d and that i might've been some help!

Have yet to check everything else.. But I gotta say first.. That site for repair panels rocks, I couldnt find crap, I looked all over and all I could find was jcwhitney and they didnt offer much. Thanks alot for that information.

Dead Link Removed

Here, thats the actual page where the pannels and the pricing is located. Sry for the bad link

as far as the check engine light goes, you gotta find out what your code is first. There is a procedure outlined on the forum here on how to get the codes yourself, or you can take it to autozone to get the codes read for free. Find out what your code is and post back here.

4. Rear anti-lock light is on in the dashboard.. What shall I do about that? Brakes work fine, Never had a problem. Fluid is fine.

You could trying taking apart: all of the breaks and looking for broken, loose, or other obvious problems.........good to check wear in pads/shoes and rotors/hubs........and check and regreese wheel bearings...........bleed the system.

ABS pumps have been know to go bad (expensive). Some folk have removed the ABS system and gone to "old school" brakes.

Or just take it to a pro, check your brakes and frt end components (tie rods, steering components, ball joints, U joints) while you're there.

Might be a bad contact on the switch or relay problem.

A/C may be low (refrigirant)..........or a leak..........or it just might be time to convert (if it wasn't done) and change out stuff.

Aloha, Mark

PS.............You didn't mention RAB (Radius Arm Bushings)??

If you haven't gotten one, yet........get a Haynes Manual.......lots of info there, too........w/ some step by step diagnosis.

8. if the blower motor works only on high, then it's a problem with the resistor that's bolted into the A/C box that's coated with the silver insulation. It's right beside the blower motor and has wires going into it from the main square relay. There's a couple bolts to take off to pull it out, it's a little coil like wire and you can get another one from the scrap yard for a few bucks. This will give you your fan settings back.

You should search on your problems. Each one is common to a 1st gen X & each has been discussed many times & there are many fixes. Will save you a lot of time.

okay i am new to this forum and i drive a 94 ford explorer xlt 4x4 and i am just wandering how to change the spark plugs

I saved this from another thread:

94 4.0L OHV Plug change--easy!

I just changed my plugs and wires, and with a little bit of rotating back and forth, I managed to get the wires off without any problem, essentially. Since I was replacing the wires, I figured it was more hassle than it was worth to try and use a plug puller--there is NOT a lot of room on mine for that. ( 4.0 OHV, 94 Exp)

Plus, I couldn't find one at the auto store when I was getting the stuff to do it.. and I'm a man, so I couldn't ask, now could I?

I'd definitely recommend getting a 5/8" SPARK PLUG socket--it has a plastic insert which will keep you from doing too much damage to the plugs (and is just the right size). With my 3/8" drive ratchet and a very short extension (3 inches max?) I got all the plugs out--no unviversal needed.

Also, on mine, I was able to get to pretty much all of them with no trouble--it's just a matter of figuring out which way to put the ratchet in.

On the passenger side, take out the airbox, and the front two plugs are as easy as the driver side. If you turn the wheels to the left, then you can easily get the last, back plug out by going in from the wheel well/going in from above. The hardest part is just getting the new plug in, since it's awfully dark back there!

Oh, and remember that the back plug angles back towards the firewall.

And just to be complete, I used Autolites double platinum with the duralast wires from autozone. Havet had much chance to drive it around yet, except to go get some gas--seems a bit peppier though.

PS...........when replacing the plugs.......remember to use anti-seize on the threads.

hey all! this is my first post. i just bought a 94 4 door 4x4 that needs a few things. i'm looking for some advise. i did a search but i haven't found the answers. (probably didn't look good enough right?) anyway here it goes

1) my 4x4 doesn't work on low range, or regular. no blinking lights, no noises, nothing.

2) i had both radius arm bushings done and i'm getting a clunk under the driver seat right before i come to a complete stop or if i have to stop immediately. it almost sounds springy. i checked the spring but it doesn't look broken.

3) the left rear door won't open from the inside. i checked the child lock feature and it's not activated.

4)when i make turns the wheel won't return all the way. it returns almost all the way but doesn't quite make it. i know the steering gear box, return, and pressure hoses need replacing cause their wet with power steering fluid. it's not a very bad leak cause it's not leaving any stains on the driveway .i'm assuming those are the reason for my steering issues but i just want to make sure.

thanks for your help.

These old post might be of some help (if you haven't seen them before):

You Said:

I just made $100 with the help of this thread! Thanks!

My friend bought a 91 or 92 EB X, he picked it up for nearly nothing, one of the 'major' problems it had is the 4x4 hasn't worked in a few years....I told him I just 're-built' my 4x4 shift motor, and I could do the same for him. I removed his shift motor, pulled the red 'keeper' out of the plug using a nail and some needle nose pliers. pulled the brown center wire out, and took the motor to my house for disassembly. Sure enough, the nylon/plastic bushing was in 5 pieces in the housing. I replaced it with a small section (1/4" - 3/8" long) of rubber hose, cleaned up the motor contacts (they were VERY black with carbon deposits), lubed and re-assembled.

I installed the motor and it worked perfectly........

Thanks!

You Also Said:

Check for loose parts.......shocks, sway bar ends and bushings, also you may want to lift up the frt (support the veh. correctly) and do some shake tests........like testing for BJs and wheel bearings.......who knows, you might hear it.

Then, You Said:

3) the left rear door won't open from the inside. i checked the child lock feature and it's not activated.

Open her up and look.........might be something as simple as a rod that has come off.

Or it could be the door handle:

And Lastly:

4)when i make turns the wheel won't return all the way. it returns almost all the way but doesn't quite make it. i know the steering gear box, return, and pressure hoses need replacing cause their wet with power steering fluid. it's not a very bad leak cause it's not leaving any stains on the driveway .i'm assuming those are the reason for my steering issues but i just want to make sure.

You could try some p/s stop leak.............though, in the long run you may just have to replace it.............box and/or hose.

Aloha, Mark

awesome! thanks for your help. the shocks are shot. so i think that's my clunk noise. i had the ball joints done at the same time i had the radius arm bushings so that kind of narrows it down. i hope.
thanks again,

i have a quick question about some of the parts i mentioned are bad. would the steering gear box ,and 4x4 motor from a 96 explorer fit on my 94? i have a friend with has a 96 with a blown tranny and decided he's going to scrap it so anything on it is up for grabs.

thanks,
