Since i just acquired my 91 explorer i have not had a chance to pick up a haynes or chiltons manual for it yet, but i was wandering how you check the codes? (sorry never owned a ford before) 8(

Also, how easy is it to drop the tranny pan and do a filter change? is there any thing in the way? perhaps the exhaust components or anything? thanks!

Check the codes to see what the CEL light means or something? If so, just go to autozone and they can plug in a code reader to tell you what codes you're showing.

Tranny pan

From the manual I have, dropping the pan sounds pretty easy. I lent the manual to a friend, but when I get it back, I'll put it up for you. I've been thinking about doing the same myself cause it sounds really easy.

The hardest part of dropping the pan on mine is that they didn't put a drain plug in it, so it's full of ATF.
As for pulling codes, you can have Autozone do it for you, if you want. But it really isn't difficult to do yourself, and only requires a paper clip or other form of jumper wire. See www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html for directions.

I thank you Shorty for the link i added it to my favorites as for the atf fluid, doesnt ford use a special type of tranny fluid or can i use dexron?
Again im sorry for this but ive never owned a ford, first time for everything i suppose...lol

Ford calls it Mercon ATF, which is the same as Dexron III
