So I finally got feed up with the loud hum/growl trucking down the road and stopped by the local Ford Dealer. A couple hours later my truck is dropped off. I asked what was wrong and he said they were ordering a new Ring/Pinon/Bearings etc for the rear end. WTF. This thing only has 30K on the clock and THANKFULLY the factory warranty. I just found this odd for something with such little mileage on it. Odd.....

This is the third time I have read about this on this forum in 2 weeks.
Apparently the Gen III trucks are having rear diff problems, Ford knows about it and should replace it under warranty. Fun fun...

Yeah, mine started howling at 36,001 miles.

I've heard quite a few mention this too. Guess I got lucky, no problems as of yet.

Yeah, there's a "kit" for it apparently?

I bought in 05 XLT Sport 4X4. The sales person said that they made a change on the 05 models that corrected these rear end isseus...maybe that is why the 05 model has Auto 4X4 and not All-Wheel-Drive? Anybody else heard this?

Which Axles? I thought most of them where 3.73 and not the 3.55s? Also I thought you could still get AWD in '05. AWD vs Auto4x4 shouldn't make a difference, on the rear end.

Not trying to hijack or anything, but curious...I am having the annoying whine problem on my 2002 and obviously am out of warranty. My question is how much can I expect to spend at the dealership to get this fixed, and is really even worth it. Is it going to cause harm, or just drive me crazy.

Thanks for any replys

Yea. Ours had the diffy replaced and is howling again. It probably won't stick around much longer to even think about it getting replaced.

I personally wouldn't worry about it unless you can't stand the noise. Ours had it from pretty much day 1 and and it lasted over 30k.

You might try replacing the gear oil with 75W-140 vs the 75W-90. This is part of the fix that Ford uses when the replaces the ring and pinion. Refer to TSB 05-12-6.
Don't forget to add the friction modifier if you have the 3.73 rear end.

the friction modifier is for the limited slip, but it also helps with foaming and keeping temps down I have been told.

Gear ratio does not matter for the modifier, it is to be used in limited slip rear ends.

Ford uses 75-140 on all their trucks after 96 I am pretty sure.

The 3.73 is THE limited slip rear end. Refer to TSB 05-12-6 as I suggested. Ford has a service kit that includes all effected bearings, seals and the gear set. They also include a sticker to refer the heavier gear oil that replaces the original 75W-90 with 75W-140 QL.
