I am learning fast about sensor lights, buying used in general, passing--or not--NY State inspections, and the '96 Explorer I purchased for my son. That is for starters.

I am unsure of forums, never having really used them. I found this site when researching for my mechanic, who is at his wits end trying to resolve the P0402 code. I brought him all the info I collected yesterday, and nothing seemed to be a surprise, so I hope I provided him something new to consider and that he can find the problem before my cost equals a new car.

I really appreciated all the information and understanding I got out of reading the submissions.

Welcome to the forum.:chug: I hope your mechanic can solve your problem for you.

I brought the info to my mechanic yesterday. Today he said he had done everything suggested, but something must have caught his eye, because he decided to change the sensor, which looked good. That did the trick, and the Explorer has now passed inspection. Great Day in the Sunshine!!!

Interesting, once before and again today I tried starting the Explorer to move it in the driveway. It didn't start for me after several tries. My son jumps in and it starts fine for him, and the mechanic drove it here just minutes before . I get in with the same key and it doesn't start for me. My son says it is so I won't drive it. I'm about 20 lbs lighter than anyone else that has driven it, is there some trick under the seat? I once had a VW that wouldn't start unless the seatbelt was secure, and the Escort needs the clutch depressed. The Explorer doesn't have a clutch and the seatbelt doesn't seem to be the issue, as it still won't start for me. Not a big issue, but a head stcratcher.
