crazy ranger tranny..

have a 87 ranger with a 1980 5.0 and a AOD.. the trans will shift 1-2-3- with no slip and will also shift 1-2-3 before I get to 20 mph,even with a heavy foot. it slips once into overdrive,40 mph, only when accelerating heavy.
there is no kick down rod,and the kick down lever on trans has a spring holding it towards the engine.. the fluid is a little overfull and does not smell burned. can we save the tranny??

did you just get this vehicle; did you do the swap yourself; or did this problem just start ?

I'm not familiar with the 80's AOD tranny, but it should either have a lever or a cable to control the kickdown/upshift. is it possible that this was left off when this combo was installed in the ranger ?

I'm guessing that your vacuum modulator is hooked up or you would be having prolonged/harsh upshifts.

need more info,,,maybe some others with a little familiarity about this AOD tranny will give you a better answer.
