The cruise contol on my '92 Explorer (4x4, automatic trans) stopped working. It's not the fuse, and my Chiltons manual doesn't have any details on the CC setup. I'd appreciate any suggestions as to how to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

1st thing I would do is check all the vacuum hoses, the dump valve on the brake pedal, and the Brake on/off switch. Then be sure to check for power to the cruise control. You'll need a wiring diagram, and, as you've discovered, DIY manuals rarely have much on cruise controls. I found a wiring diagram in a manual at the library, you might try that.

Looks like that's a good resource, but you may want to get the factory service manual-- there's a guy on ebay that sells a CD ROM version for $5-$10. I got it and it is very helpful. I actually contains diagnostic procedures for the most common problems, so you may want to check that out.

Do check the simple things first though-- My cruise control died too and it turned out to be the clutch position sensor which had come loose (I have a standard tranny.) All I did was clip it back on and cc worked again.
