cruise control problems

I have a 2004 ford explorer with 140000 miles, the cruise control is acting erraticly. It has a hard time engaging and will not stay engaged once I get it to lock in. What may be the cause?

You most likely need a new brake switch that mounts to the master cylinder. What you have is the exact symptom of a bad switch. They were recalled way back when but maybe yours didn't get changed. You can get the correct Ford Motorcraft kit from Amazon for under $20.00.
