The manual says:

Under normal conditions, your vehicle’s climate control system should be
left in any position other than MAX A/C or OFF when the vehicle is
parked. This allows the vehicle to ‘‘breathe’’ through the outside air inlet
duct.

I've never done this, I was always taught by my old man to shut everything off (radio, wipers, climate control, etc) before shutting a car off. I'm assuming an extremely cold day/night doesn't count as "normal conditions" but maybe I'll start doing this in the spring/summer. Just curious if anyone else knew about this...

i usually turn the HVAC off, along with everything else. not for any particular reason, it just seems logical to me, because the next time i use the vehicle i don't want all that stuff on taking power away from the starter and the stereo blaring in my ears.

I as well shut everything off and usually turn the radio down quite a bit... but with car completely off i noticed you can hear kind of a hissing noise when you turn the ac on.. this must be the "breathing" thing.

I don't do anything. I hate to move back and forth the blender door and what ever else is moving inside... Just bceause I had to replace the door actuator and it was a pain.

I only turn stuff off if it's going to be real cold so there's not that extra draw on the battery at startup.

i do that to. and with my remote start it gets up to temp faster with no heat on...

In the spring/summer/fall, I leave the ETAC temp set to 60 degrees, mode to VENT, and fan off. I also read that recommendation in the owner's manual. I chose to follow it.

In the winter, I leave the ETAC temp set to 90 degrees, mode to VENT, and fan on high. I do this due to the remote start.

I have a kick-ass battery and am not concerned about it not having enough cajones to start the 5.0L.

But that's just me...

your truck will heat up faster if you turn off the heat in the winter. with heat on your essentially drawing heat away from your motor and into the cabin. i like to trap all that heat in and wait for the engine to get up to temp then crank the heat..

I can see that. Thanks!

This is exactly why I just leave mine wherever it is. I don't want to replace the door actuator anytime soon.

The actuator is easy! Takes 10 minutes at most. The door on the other hand.....

I turn the radio down (heard it's good for speakers) and turn everything else off. And set the parking brake

Depends of what controls you have! I have automatic AC, the actuator is the one without the clip-in base, just the screws. Space for the last (third) screw is so tiny I had to cut an 8mm wrench in half and still I had space for just 1/8 rotation. For the whole screw to come out it took 20 agonizing minutes. My hand was cramping. I couldn't put another one in.

Assuming it's the same screws as mine I don't have any problems getting a 1/4" ratchet back there?

99% of the time I don't WANT my car to "breathe" through the outside vent. Unless I happen to be parked outside a really good restaurant or something. And I don't want to get hit by the arctic blast as soon as I start the engine. I normally turn it off, but leave it wherever I want -- the car will take care of itself.

Without looking at the mechanism, I wonder whether it matters anyway. I would expect the vacuum operated doors to end up in the same place when the vacuum supply goes away no matter where the switch is set.

Vacuum hangs around for awhile, turn your truck off and start flipping the switches. You can hear it working

Yes, that's true ... until the vacuum reserve leaks down.

Reread your post I think I misunderstood what you were saying. You're probably right. I'll have to see if it's still got vacuum after sitting for a day

With a regular socket on it, is too "tall" to fit. Especially when screw goes up a couple threads.

I guess something else is different. I just use a regular short socket

The reason they recommend not turning it to "off" or "recirc" is that these positions don't allow the evaporator to dry out, eventually giving you a moldy stale smell when running the ac and/or fogged windows on first start up on cool mornings. I'm not fussy so wherever it's left is how it stays.

I do, however, have issues when careless drivers in the household leave the wipers on before shutting the vehicle off. If it freezes or snows, first start in the morning is usually accompanied by four-letter epithets.
