i recently had my stock muffler changed out for a flowmaster 70 series (dual inlet / single outlet) and was told that i could get could get it louder and have a little better performance if i change my factory tailpipe for a new custom 2.5" to 3" pipe. also i was told that there are resonators in the tailpipe which is preventing me from getting the full sound of the flowmaster. is this true?

thanks for everything,
kenny

It is my understanding that you can put any size tip on and get better sound but you'll lose low end torque.

lose torque? are you sure? even if i get a new tailpipe with mandrel bending, keeping th eoriginal diameter? how is this possible. now u said tip, my neighbor has a single in/ dual out tip that produces a throatier sound. the length from th einlet of the tip to the outlet is only about 10-11". will that little distance rob low end torque from me? if so how much. sorry about all the questions, but i'll be getting a boat and don't wanna lose alot of power.
thanks,
kenny

Oh I was paying attention. You just want to put a bigger tip on? I don't see a problem with that, you'll probably get a little better sound but nothing overwhelming. Just don't get one too big.

If you drink 5 cups of coffee a day so you can finish off the can and do your exhaust mod, BAAAAD!

i read your other thread ksaldibar, and you mean a new tail pipe, from the outlet of the muffler all the way out to the back of the truck.

if you get the same size pipe as stock, why would you even bother? it wont make a difference.

if you go with 2.5" pipe, itll sound a lil louder, youll lose a little tiny bit of low end torque, but youll gain some high end horsepower.

if you go with 3" pipe, itll be louder, but youll lose a decent amount of low end torque, though youll gain some high end horsepower. personally, i think 3" pipe is a bad idea.

yes, the stock pipes have a resonator that is somewhat restricting your system. when you get new pipes, they wont put a resonator in there.

keep in mind, tailpipe and tip are 2 different things. the tip is just that - the very tip of the tailpipe which does nothing - its all for looks, which is why they sell chrome ones and 4 billion different styles of them. the tailpipe is the length of pipe that comes out of the outlet of the muffler.

keep us up to date on what you end up doing and how it sounds (especially on the highway), since im really considering going with a 70 series next summer.

good luck.

On my old explorer I went with a Flowmaster that was dual inlet and dual outlet then put dual pipes on it. Sounded real nice and added some extra hp.

2.5" exit pipe is fine for a sploder 6 (i had that one mine before i hacked it off) the resonator is above the rear axle...so by replacing the pipes behind the muffler, it will remove the resonator..... the bigger the exit pipe the louder with less torque....

ok, now i fully understand the deal with new pipes. i am definitely getting a tip for some louder sound. depending on the price, i will get a new tailpipe of the same size, but without the resonators because i want a throatier sound. for others that have gotten custom pipes, what have you guys paid for it to be done? now about me and highway driving, i'll get some in this weekend because it was in the shop since the day after i got it because the paint job i received after an accident over the summer was defective so it was fixed under warrentee.

When you get a new tailpipe, get one that's 1/4" wider than your stocker. This will make the new one 2.25 or 2.5" depending on your stock pipe. By only going this much bigger, you should not lose any torque, but should gain power and sound.

No explanations as to why it will work, I don't have time ;) Just listen to me :D

the "tip" wont give you any louder sound, its the bigger pipe that will. the tip is just for looks, thats it. if you want louder, youll need a bigger tailpipe (from the outlet of the muffler to the very end of the pipe at the rear of the truck, where the exhaust exits.) since your stock is prolly 2.25", alecs right, go with a 2.5" pipe.

no new pipe afterall, but.....

hey guys, in the end i didnt get a pipe. i just got pilot 2.5" single inlet with dual 3" outlet and while they were at it, i had them remove my resonator. it sounds awesome. and no sooner did i leave the lot of midas a pulled up next to a ricer and put him to shame :) now with the highway noise, its not bad at all. u'll definitely hear it when u get on the gas a little, but cruising isn't bad at all.
