So Im debating on which sub to get. I dont know which to get, either the kicker cvx 10"(-$110 & 600watts rms) or the kicker cvr 15"(-$120 & 500 watts rms). I chose these because they are approximately in the same price range and well because I like Kicker ;) . Which one do you guys suggest? Im also planning on building the box (vented) for the sub Ill end up getting. The Kicker website suggests that the cvx should be in a max 1.75 cu^3 vented box & the cvr in a max. 5 cu^3 vented box. Im confused on which one to get because I want something loud but I don't know whether to go with the cvx b/c its more powerful or the cvr b/c of the large enclosure. Which one do you guys think would be louder?

-The amp i have will easily handle the cvr but not sure of the cvx. The amp i have is a Legacy amp. - http://www.amazon.com/LEGACY-LA1110...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1293684207&sr=1-2

It easily pushes my two 10" comps and it also pushes my 10" cvr. So I dont think the cvr15 would be a problem.

anyone?

Get the CVR 15", lower and louder. Put it in a good ported enclosure, troll the car audio sites to see where most people like to tune the CVRs at. But i'd say around 38hz..

Neither! I'd get a JL or a Rockford. I've seen WAY to many Kicker stuff come back because they blew up.

buddy of mine has two kicker cvr comp 15's in closed box in his 86 blazer. he's gotta a 4000 watt amp running both at 4 ohms so really each is gettin 1000 watt's which is perfect cuz the comp's max i think was like 1000-1200 or something like that and it hits HARD.

Well I've run both the CVR's and the CVX's... but they were different sizes than what you're looking for. I was running two 12" CVR's, now I run a single 15" CVX (plans for 2 in the next few weeks).

You're asking which will be louder... you gotta look at a few things:

Displacement: Look at a 10" compared to a 15"... the 15" is gonna be moving a LOT more air then the 10". If you're wanting deebeez, which is sound pressure, you'll want the sub that's gonna allow you to create the most pressure at once.

Cone area (about, not exactly):
10: 78.5 cubic inches
15: 176.625 cubic inches

The 15" has more cone area than 2 10" subwoofers...

I personally believe the 15" will give you what you want, which will be that low drive hard hitting punch. I would tune whatever box you end up building to about 32hz or so. You have a bunch of airspace in the Explorer to fill, and you'll need to take advantage of any power you're sending to the subwoofer. And I feel that frequency woudl benefit you with whatever type music you want to play. My box with 2 12's was tuned at that, and it could hit the low note in "Put On" superrrrr easyyyyy.

I would think heavily about replacing your amplifier with a brand that is known for putting out rated power. I don't see how an amp can get anywhere close to 1100 watts with two 15 amp fuses. My Kicker 750.1 has two 40 amp fuses, and the birth sheet placed it at almost 950watts... Just think about it. I also think that if you don't set the gain correctly on the ampifier you'll fry whatever sub you get super quick.

So in short, this is what I would do:
15" CVR, put it in a box that's 4.0 cubes at 32hz.
You also want to build the port large enough so to not choke the sub at all. I think it's 9-13 inches per cubic foot you want for the port?

That link is to a thread that links you to a "Box Calculator" download. It's the best one on the net right now. It'll even tell you what range your port should be and what it is. Message me if you want to ask anything else, I've dealt exclusively with Kicker products for about 5 years now and have never had a problem.

@ stocked which subs would you suggest from JL? If its better than the kicker cvr15 or cvx10 then Ill go and buy a JL sub instead.

@ ford freak thats too much money for that sub.

@ Blacksheep Josh thanks!! If another better sub doesnt come up through out this week Ill definately buy the cvr next weekend since Im getting paid. And yeah Im planning on changing the amplifier later on after I build the subwoofer box. And I had made a subwoofer box through the re enclosure calculater, but Ill see through the link you gave me. Thanks!

One hell of a review. A kicker sub is overpriced and you pay for the advertising. A Sundown will rape the Kickers mentioned. They have been metered around 148 db's from a rated 600 watt sub. You can't ask for more.Once you guys here get away from the mainstream junk that gets advertised it is shocking what is out there. has anyone here ever heard an FI Driver?

@ ford freak well the sundown is almost $200. I mean yeah Ive seen videos of them on youtube and well I know they are worth the money but im on a budget. The cvr15 that im planning to get is $120. After the spending $120 on the sub, I still have to build the box. So I can buy the sub and make the box for $200 or less.

yeah I have heard of the Fi driver but Ive never seen or heard one personally.

Ok we have a start....You made a statement that the Sundown wasn't worth the price and i disagreed. It is worth every penny. Let's back up a bit. You said you are going to replace the amp you have....that's good. Are you going to stick with an amp that does around 600 watts? Let me dig up something in the 600 watt range but at what impedance?

yeah I have heard of the Fi driver but Ive never seen or heard one personally.

They make a fantastic driver that gets really loud and sounds great as well. My son has an FI SSD 12 that he has for sale. I think he wants $150. Just throwing that out there but it might be a good fit for you. It would destroy a kicker any day.

Am I breaking any rules by doing this? If I am it's not intentional. It would be a little over 200 shipped brand new but he would go 150 shipped.

well i want to go to 2 ohms. 1 ohm if possible. I dont want to change the alt. As far as electrical, I am just going to the big 3 and maybe the battery but not sure. Im not trying to do alot on this car since its my moms future car. Im looking at the fi subs in their website and well let me tell you kicker is off the list. :) Now I just have to find a better amp

@ stocked which subs would you suggest from JL? If its better than the kicker cvr15 or cvx10 then Ill go and buy a JL sub instead.

I'm a big fan of JL's W3 line. They're a little more than the CVR's but well worth it. I'm running 2 JL 10W3v2 with a Rockford P500-1 at 1 ohm (rated 500 watts) in a bedbox in my minitruck. It's been metered at 142.9 db with the windows up and 144.3 with the windows down.

The main reason why I love JL woofers is you don't need alot of power to make them sound good. Would I buy JL strictly for SPL, probly not, cause contrary to popular belief, JL does not make any of their subs for SPL purposes. They're mainly for sound quality.

If you just want loud bass, then I suggest Rockford or those Fi subs. I've heard about Fi but never heard them in person. If you want good, clean, accurate bass then I suggest JL Audio.

The main thing to consider is everyone has "thier" brand, I have mine. I would go out and listen to as many as you can and decide for yourself.

What do you think? Do you know any better subs that are less than $200? Im not really looking for sound quality but SPL.
