Cylinder behind muffler on 99 4.0 sohc??

There is a cylinder i want to say about 7 inches long a few inches behind my muffler on my 1999 explorer xlt 4.0 sohc. I wanted to know what it was and if i remove it if it will set any codes?

resonator?

I suspect that you are describing the resonator. Replacing it with a piece of exhaust pipe should have no effect on your emissions but may result in an irritating drone noise depending on your muffler type.

i thought it might be a resonator...in about a week im going to change my stock muffler anyways but i wanted to see what it would sound like without it.

i just replaced my stock muffler and resonator with a pre fab 2.5 y pipe and a 22inch dynomax ultraflo with 2.5 pipe going out the back to a 8inch long 2.75 tip and it sounds awesome...not to loud but not quite ill try to get a video up asap

oh yea mine is also the 302

i wanted the 5.0 but as of right now i cant afford too much gas haha
