D 35/30? vrs 44?

I see d35/30? straight axles are much cheaper than 44,s What would be the problem whith using it? wrong side or rotation, length. Give me your thoughts. I like the idea of the straight axle but 44,s might be over kill for my application.

I f I am using the wrong terminology please correct me. My search did not turn up what I was looking for. The d44 seems expensive and very sought after. What is the next lighter usable part..

Where have you seen a D35 front axle? I've never heard of one used in a front axle application.

Thats a start. I am trying to find out what will work, so I guess eliminating one will help to. What is the fornt end all the #eep people are trading out for there d44 swap.

Many Jeeps come stock with a D30. They are available in both low pinion and high pinion with the high pinion being stronger and less susceptible to driveshaft issues.

If you want to run a tire no bigger than a 33 it would be great. You could run a 35 if you built one up, but no bigger.

Thank you Jason!

An inexpensive alternative. For those who are not to extreme. I like the idea.

If you aren't looking to go extreme, a HP D30 out of a XJ or YJ Jeep is prolly a perfect choice for you. Width is about the same as your X and bolt pattern is the same. They also usually sell for cheap because Jeepers are getting rid of them like crazy to upgrade to D44s.

Are you looking to do a SAS (straight axle swap) yourself?

Honestly, If you're not gonna beat the crap out of it, you don't need to swap axles. I think going to a D30 would be a waste of time and money. The existing D35 TTB will be fine for lighter wheelin' - even with 35's. I've been running 35's for 18 months with little issues. Sure, I broke a hub - no biggie. The alignment is the issue with these axles. Be sure to replace all front axle ujoints before/during the lift install. It will save you a ton of hassles.

The money you save by getting a D30 instead of a D44 will be used up the first time you break the D30.

BTW - What kind of wheeling do you expect to be doing?

Jon

If you're already doing an SAS, get the d44. Why go through the trouble only to get something less strong?

Yes I believe I am. After reading about the problems with drop brackets and the price of racer custom TTB,s, A semi budget straight axle conversion looks good. Plus I fabricate alot of my companies work equiptment so the tools and shop time are free.

reply to alec and FMExplorer

Because I can and I want to, :} Bored I wheel as you call it, every day. Iwant add a little highth and have a project that does not eat my wallet up. I do not consider this an intensive project. Just some fun.

1991 x with 190,000 second trans at 110,000 rebuilt it myself no problems since. No broken suspension parts. Swapped engine for a 93 I rebuilt myself at 130,000. I,m not hard on my equiptment. But I do enjoy working on it!

if you can make a d44 fit, then go ahead, dont bother with a d35, wish ford did the same, also jason 5.... fords been using d35's in explorers since they came out, just in '95 they went to ifs

Explorers never came with any type of straight axle(30, 35, 44, 60, any).

Robb

edit: in front :D

i thought they were striaght axles in91-94. i know they weren't using torsion bars at that time, what were they then? please hlep me help me

the D3s TTB (twin traction beam) was a half-attempt at a hybrid between IFS and solid axle. It came in th 1st generation explorers.

ALYZ1FLR---I say go for it....!! If you want a SAS d30....then do it. Who knows, you could run a tire as big as 37? Just b/c it didnt work for others doesnt mean it wont work for you. There are some 1st generations that can run 35 tires just fine, and then some that would break....there are a lot of different variables involved! Just b/c someone says you CANT run a 38 tire on a d35...doesnt mean you cant try!!
