I've got a 95 Limited. I was about to replace the halfshafts, because I have slight popping when driving and the CVs seem the culprit. I haven't used 4WD in a while, as the front diff looked like it had a leak and I didn't have the time or money to have it repaired.
Jacked up and taking a close inspection, it appears the driver's side halfshaft seal is busted. Oil all over that area. Makes sense as I had an impact on that wheel years back.
Wheels jacked off the ground, the front driveshaft is off. I spin the flange and neither wheel moves. I spin the driver's side tire and every once in a while the flange spins a little, as if it was catching on a friction pad or something. I spin the passenger's side tire, it only spins about 1 rotation or less in either direction before it becomes hard to spin and the entire diff and vacuum disconnect assembly moves with it, like the halfshaft is pressing against it and is locked up so the whole housing is trying to move with it. Also during all this spinning, there is no internal sounds from the housing whatsoever.
I am going to remove the halfshafts and drop the diff housing, although I'd like to have a general idea of what I'm looking at before I do. Does this sound horrible, will I need to buy a junk/rebuilt front diff assembly and fix it up and replace, or might this be salvagable with some work? I'm not afraid to spend some time and use the right tools to fix this guy.
