ok, so I had a check engine light come on, and I tested it to find out it was a leak in the gas cap setup. So i fixed it. The check engine light has been like that for a month after but it didn't effect driving so i wasn't stressed. But last night I pulled the battery cable to clear the code and see if that took care of it. The light has stayed off.

However.... driving to work today (first time since clearing it), it shifted really hard. The ST revs up to past 3k on the odometer shifts hard, then flashes the OD light. I have read all about the dreaded OD light and even had it happen once or twice... but overall it's been fine. I realize that when you clear the computer, the tranny has to "relearn" how you drive.... but i didn't think it was supposed to drive like crap until it learned. I could say "it just needs a rebuild" but I find it odd that it all happened after I cleared the computer system.

thoughts?

I know Autozone reads basic codes.... am I gonna need a tranny shop for transmission codes?

That's why I said call around. A flashing OD light is far more serious and well beyond adaptive learning. GL

yea, i found a shop that's gonna do a code check for it tomorrow morning.

ok, so i took it to a shop today... they read the codes and drove it. here is what I got:

P0732 Gear 2 Incorrect ratio
P0733 Gear 3 Incorrect ratio
P0422 Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

He also said that the computer is telling it to shift... but its getting all the way to it telling the transmission to shift into 4th before it shifts.

took it to another shop that was highly recommended... they confirmed the tranny is shot. both 2nd and third slipping. with 150k... im not gonna put the money into it. So...bye bye Sport Trac.

I don't know of this will help, but this is what came to mind as I read your post.

Check out that thread, also is your Trac a Job 1 or Job 2 model, early or late 2001? Whats the build date?
Good point, although this article only mentions a single p0733 DTC, and not the p0732 the OP also has. Possible?

Not sure of the build date... and regardless, it's too late. I actually sold it this afternoon. That may seem premature, but I was able to get a good price. On the hunt for something else now. The Trac was a great truck, but there were lots of things starting to get twitchy...and I was starting to hear some timing chain rattle. With 150k, I just wasn't willing to start tossing money at it. Maybe I'll bag one with fewer miles. Thanks for the help guys, you guys are always willing to lend a hand.. and that's awesome.
