dash light / dome lights

my 02 xls has dash and dome light issues dome lights don't work when door is opened will work when switched on at light odometer and radio light works in daytime but when you turn on head lights the dash lights go dim ,if you turn dimmer wheel so that dash lights come up then dome lights come on.
is this a head light dash dimmer switch or other electrical gremlins ??

First check the wire bundle for broken wires coming from the vehicle into your driver's side door.
