My '93 4.0L has 303,000 miles on it, and has never been apart. It runs fine, and always starts right up.

However, I am considering taking it a long (3000 mile-ish) trip this summer. Ideally, I would like to replace the engine and tranny - but that is not going to happen this year. So, I'm wondering if a little extra preemptive maintenance would be in order, or would I just be giving myself future problems?

Would it be smart to pull off the intake and clean the carbon deposits out of the innards? Theoretically, I should gain a little power/throttle response, and maybe a hint of gas mileage. But reliability is may concern. If it ain't broke, don't fix it - it ain't, so...

Or just leave it alone?

I am a little leary of taking such a long trip with so many mile on the engine. But, it runs fine.

Any thoughts?

Leave it alone - air/fuel ratrio is tracked by the ECU via the oxygen sensor.

I vote leave it alone. With the mileage you have getting in there could cause you more problems that you dont have
