My Explorer had been shuddering for a few seconds once in a while the last couple of weeks when idling and RPMs<500- and today it shuddered badly and died! This time it will not start back up.
(Replaced EGR valve (according to error code) several months back when I had a similar problem, and it seemed to fix it.)
This time however:
OBD-I error code 542-Fuel Pump circuit open; PCM to motor
Been reading other posts about fuel pump and FPR problems, and I was just wondering what this code suggests more specifically.
Should I try replacing FPR first, or is it definately that the fuel pump has died?
Any advice or suggestions?
95' Explorer XLT V6 4L :)
Thanks!

I would suggest that you check the relay, fuse, and inertia switch first. If you bypass the relay, you will hear the fuel pump turn on it only the relay were the problem. You could also test the fuel pump from the EECIV test connector.

The inertia switch can also affect the FP not running. Make sure it's not tripped, and that the connector wire on the bottom is firmly attached. Also, you can get a new FP relay for about $7, and it takes 5 minutes to install.
