I've got a 1992 Explorer, manual transmission, 95,000 miles. 2-3 weeks ago I was experiencing a bucking/jerking problem around the 2000-2500 rpm range in 1st and 2nd gear only. Bucking and jerking hard enough to throw you forward. It was very inconsistent and would stop as soon as I shifted into the next gear. This problem steadily began to get worse and worse and was becoming more and more frequent throughout all gears. Jump to 3 days ago. Driving through stop and go traffic, the bucking and jerking started in first gear at a much lower rpm range causing me to shift into 2nd gear much earlier than usual. During this bucking and jerking, the tac began erratically bouncing up and down until I would shift to which the bucking would stop, until the rpm's increased to around 2000 or slightly above where it would act up again. I stopped at a red light only to have the rpm's reving up and down from typical idle to almost 2 grand. This is where the engine simply died and I was stuck. It would not start and I had to push it off the street into a nearby parking lot. As I sat there for over an hour waiting for a friend to come pick me up...I decided to try and start the vehicle again. This time it started right up and seemed like it was running just fine. Very inconsistent. Since this problem has started I have cleaned the MAF sensor and reset the computer. I have noticed that the positive battery cable is slightly corroded and consistently comes loose. The only fix that I know needed taken care of before this problem started was that the exhaust system is very rusty and had numerous holes throughout the muffler. My first instinct was that the vehicle wasn't getting fuel properly....but the inconsistency doesn't make sense to me. I did let a friend borrow my explorer while I was away on business and she managed to lose my gas cap. Would that cause any problems with fuel pressure or air entering the fuel lines? This problem has baffled me and many other individuals with much more mechanical knowledge than myself. There are no check engine lights, nor any major leaks that I can find. Please help!
