My X's fuel gauge has been dead for some time and I've been too lazy to post about it until now when my trip meter said 190 and I ran outta gas (was using the trip odometer as a fuel gauge) My dad and I both think it's the sending unit in the tank that is the source of our problem. Would this be a correct assumption and how would I go about fixing it?

It's the float inside the tank, a common problem with earlier fords. (mine too). You have to drop the tank and pull the pump. You can either drain the float and seal it or pick up a new float from your local dealer ship for $3. Bet they have it in stock.

BTW Run out of gas at 190? That's like 9 miles to the gallon. My gauge's been out for several years. Too lazy to drop the tank, but I still get 350 to the tank. usually always fill at 250 to be safe.

happened in mine to we just sadered the hole shut make sure to clean off first we dont want u to catch you arm on fire:) lol gl man

If you are going to the trouble of dropping the tank- replace everything in the tank- the filter, pump, sender as a unit, get a new lock ring and o-ring since the existing is most likely rusted on and cant be reused.

You can pull the plug at the top of the tank and check to make sure its the sender before you do the work. Most likely the sender but just to be sure. If the sender is out, your pump may not be too far behind.

Do a search on the site you should find plenty of threads on dropping the tank, the fuel tank, and the sender.

Good Luck

Well, we know it's not the pump. It hasn't been in the tank that long. But I think you guys are right about the sender or the float being messed up.

As for my gas mileage. When I do highway driving I'll get 350mi to a tank. But here in Amarillo Traffic's so gosh damned awful I'm lucky to get 12 mpg. It takes me TEN MINUTES to get to work and I only live three miles away. It'll be worse when my '61 F100 is finished because I'll be lucky to get 10mpg out of its built-to-race 351 Cleveland.
