Ok, I know there are a lot of questions out there regarding car audio, but I need help with my new system. I recently purchased a 10" MTX 6000 sub (model #6104 to be exact) in addition to an MTX 152 amp. I have heard that this amp can run about 150 RMS when bridged. Before I install this bad boy I want to be positive that this system will sound sweet in the back of my 1995 Explorer Sport. If anyone has either of these products or can offer a little wisdom on if there is enough power to push this sub please help me out. Additionally, if I decide to get another 10" sub down the road, will this amp be able to run that one too? Anyone have any other suggestions on a better amp or anything else that is related? I am willing to listen and I am desperate for some advice so please help!!

That amp will be just fine for the one woofer. If you add more you are gonna have to upgrade a little. MTX amps are awesome, a little pricey but they pound. Most times they create much more power than is rated on the box. All MTX amps should come with a spec sheet telling what your amp really puts out.

As for the sub, it's not the best of quality but it's certainly not a piece of junk. The problem with the 6000 series is that they distort very easily at what seems like a very low power. My friend had an MTX 6000 12" in his trunk and it sounded good from inside but once you open the trunk it was all blah blah blah. In the explorer since there is no separate trunk, at high volumes you may experience some distorion.

Mrsteve,

Did your friend have it in a box, or was the trunk used as the box (assuming it was in a regular car). It may have had something to do with his bad bass when the trunk was open. If the trunk was open, and depending on how the box was positioned it would sound crappy because all the waves are escaping. If the sub was mounted behind a seat with the trunk as the box, then it's because there's no more box volume.

Also, what kind of amp did he have? If he had the gains turned up all the way it would make it sound pretty bad too. I wouldn't think that the 6000 would sound so bad at such low volumes.

I'm guessing that most of the problem is that he didn't set some stuff up correctly. I bet you could fix most of his problem yourself since you're pretty knowledgable. Great, I forgot how to spell "knowledgable". Does it have another "e" in it somewhere? Crap.

Ryan,
Did you ever get the email about the Crunch Amp. I agree with both of these guys. MTX is good, but you would need a bigger amp for another sub. Also the MTX 6000 is suppose to be a good sub, so those problems seem to be something else, like the box. If you got the Crunch you could definitely run 2 subs with it. Or one sub and a set of speakers, whatever. Let me know if you have more questions.

He had it in a small sealed box and was running a sony amp too it. Not sure on the wattage but it was one of the new X-ploid amps. I just thought it distorted too much. He had rockford fosgate wiring and this was his third system set up so I don't know if it was his wiring. I know that when I have the rear window or the rear hatch opened on my Explorer my subs don't sound that loud or as deep but when the hatch and window is closed and the doors are open or the windows it sounds great. I don't know I've got pretty low end subs. They're just rockford fosgate punch subs, like $60-70 a piece and they are only getting 70 watts each but I think my subs sound louder and more clear than his did. He agreed with me. That's why now he's got Orion XTR's and Sound Stream amps.

Yeah, depending on the car's inner space, makes a huge difference. If he didn't have an SUV, it makes HUGE difference. With and SUV you get the benefit of a large space which allows better listening environment, particularly of bass. With the rear open, a lot of the bass waves are lost to the outside. Do you like his XTR's? I've never really given them any fair listening, they look just like really heavy bass subs for a boomier sound. Well, that's just what seemed to me since their the pulp style cones.

Byrd91, thank you very much for the e-mail, and yes I got it just the other day. I appreciate your advice very much and I would like to know if anyone else knows anything or would recommend the Crunch V-3004 Amp over the MTX 152. There is a huge price difference between the two. Remember as of right now I only need to "push" 1 10" MTX 6000 sub for my 2-door explorer. So should I go with the MTX which is 150 RMS x 1 when bridged or with the Crunch which is RMS 75x4 or 250x2. That is a huge difference, but not such a great brand so it is a judegment call. What does everyone think??? Thanks.

I've heard his car once with the XTR's. He's now away at college so I hardly see him. The XTR's are really loud. They sound pretty good though. Now if you wanna talk about booming woofers, I met this kid a party with a 2000 Limited Explorer. His sound system alone is insured to $15,000. He's got 5 15" subs. I couldn't see what type they were but his car pounded! You couldn't see out the back due to all the subs and amps back there. He also had 4 monitors. One upfront in the Alpine head unit, one in the overhead console and one in the back of each front seat. He had Playstation 2 and Dreamcast. This kid's parents are like kazillionaires. Oh well.
