2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4L
I have a pretty good ticking noise on me 2002 Ford X XLt 4.0l..

Alittle history: Picked this truck up in Aug 13 transmission was blown, bought a used trans had it installed Fixed all four quick struts & upper ball joints assemblies. Now the truck drove with the bad tranny and had this noise (i think) prior to used trans being install could it be the torque converter or maybe the timing chains?? Any help would be appreciated.. The truck runs good and seems to shift fine just not sure what that noise is.

Here is a vid of noise easiest to hear best inside truck at end.. noise increases & decreases with throttle. listen close Thanks in advance.

This is rough. I think a heard a sound that was similar to someone tapping a small rock on concrete. That may also be my crappy computer speakers with the sound turned up.
Seemed irregular at best.
If it's the sound that makes me think you have the 4.6l instead of the 4.0 (kind of like an old train or something) then I'd suggest exhaust issues?

Hey thanks for listening, I'm not familiar with the 4.6L issues, but the tapping rock on concrete is exactly what I'm talking about...Now just came back from a 260 mi trip this weekend and the X ran and shifted great no issues...So do you think it could be an exaust manifold gasket leak? It is definitely associated with engine RPM changes, or could it be timing chains related in your opinion? truck only has 128,000 on it and the used trans has about 98,000.

From what I hear, timing is a major problem on the 4.0's. Did an oil change the other weekend. Before the oil pushes through the engine again there's a "knock" sound. That's what I hear in your video. The video has a pretty over power sound to it, which may just be recording. Otherwise, it sounds like something isn't getting oil as it should.

Timing chain rattle resolution process - SOHC V6

I rarely can tell much when listening to online videos. A typical engine speed dependent rattle source is the camshaft timing chain related components: Timing chain rattle resolution process - SOHC V6
