Hey guys and gals. I have a silly question. I have a 93 explorer xl and I cannot find the diagnostic port. It is not where my manual says it is. I keep getting a check engine light and want to see what it is. The light resets when the ignition is shut off. Thanks for any and all responses.

it is directly behind the fuse box under the hood it might still be plugged into the holding thing will look like the abs tester holder only its black

Thanks for the responses. I looked behind the distribution block in the engine compartment but it is not there, but attatched to the front sheetmetal in front of the washer resevoir is a plug that goes to nothing. It is oval shaped and about 1.5 to 2 inches wide. Can this be it? Thanks.

Steve

Is that connector red? If so that's the ABS connector.
It should be behind the under hood fuse block. Maybe look under & around it. May be stuffed under some wires.

the oval shaped plug is not it, that is for day time running lamps

Your diagnostics port should be near the heater blower motor, just under the passenger side hood hinge, or near there..

I'm sure glad this came up.

I also have a 93' ex and would like to get a code reader for it. Can anyone recommend a good reader for my 93'? Thanks

I have a cheapie from AutoZone, Actron brand. It's something like $20-30.

It's very basic, no readout display, you have to count the beeps/flashes.

BTW, the connector on my 94 is sort of trapezoid-shaped, if that helps. It's definitely right behind the power distribution box on the passenger side. I didn't know there was a holder (and never looked for it)...

UPDATE:

I finally found the diagnostic port. It was behind the distribution block like you all said, but the christmas tree connector that attatches it to the block was pulled out and it was sitting under the blower motor. I was getting a little worried there for a bit. Now to scan it and see what is causing my CEL to turn on. Thanks for the help.

A good way to check the codes without a scanner is to use this method
ford_dtc_test.gif
and you dont need a analog meter either hook up your digital one then hop in turn the key to the on position (have a pen and paper ready) and count the flashes of the check engine light

I am a little confused, so you can use a digtal, I assume set to dc volts, but you read the code by watching the CE light on the dash? what does the dig VOM due then?

The voltmeter is simply an output device. If you are counting the flashes of the CEL, you don't need to wire in the voltmeter. the STI to ground jumper is all that is needed.
