But if you are an American with a 16 year old DUI and no other problems ever with the law, you are a danger to Canada....

I actually find this more laughable than insulting.

I agree that is really unbelievable, can you not have that record expunged after a certain time period?

Lmao at the comments!
If I had a picture of you I could compare it with those posters at the post office to see if you've made 'the list'.

Not in the U.S. States vary, but are pretty similar. In my state, you can only expunge any conviction (even the lowest level misdemeanor - one notch above a summary offense traffic ticket - which is what my 16 year old DUI is) if "you are at least 70 years old and ten or more years have passed since the time of any criminal proceedings against you, or the subject of the record has been dead for at least three years" per PA Code. That in itself is draconian to me for a low level misdemeanor so I put it both on my state of PA and Canada.

Honestly, this 16 year old DUI has had no effect on my life or career in the U.S. in the least. Changed jobs 3 years after I got it, indicated it on the application and was hired for that higher level corporate management job and my career has been great - yet I can't enter Canada.

So I do put it on Canada as the U.S allows Canadians with one DUI to enter the U.S.

I do believe Canada wold give me a waiver, but the process is so draconian it is not worth it. I have no reason to visit Canada outside of being a tourist, and like I said, every other free country in the world will take me as is. I have traveled the world the past 16 years. That's where my tourist dollars go. It would be nice to visit Canada at some point, but Canada has decided I am not worthy, so it is what it is. In my view - Canada's loss not to have my tourist dollars and many like me. You can have the Syrian refugees. Take ours too. I have nothing against immigrants, but that area of the world is too much of a hotspot for me to take chances right now. Ah, but I'm too much of chance. It's comically stupid.

A lot of the worlds laws would change if we were to use the same law. That is, whatever your law is for our citizens, the same law will apply to your citizens when they come here, or attempt to come here. If I, as a US citizen, can't own property in your country, then people from your country wouldn't be able to own land in the US. Reciprocal laws even the playing field. Massachusetts is the only state that I know of that doesn't recognize a drivers learners permit from another state.
