Use an oil filter equipped with an anti-drainback valve in it. Without it, the oil filter needs to be filled before it sends oil to the rest of the engine.

Regards.

HAHAHAH i have not heard about this problem since i got rid of my Ranger. It brings back so many memories of me at the dealership and them telling me that they have no idea what is wrong.

I had the same problem on my 2001 Ranger, it only seemed to happen after it turned 100,000 for some reason, and only when it would be cool to cold out. I would start the truck up and let it run in the winter and no matter how long i let it warm up the oil gauge would not move, but as soon as i started down the road it would be fine.

If you search either www.rangerpowersports.com or www.offroadrangers.com you might be able to find some of my old posts (same user name). From what we could find out the way the oil gauge was setup in those models was a resistor (i think...) that would only show "normal" oil pressure if your actual oil pressure was between such and such a PSI. If it was below (but within accepable limits, at least in my case) it would show like you had no oil pressure at all as indicated with the gauge. Its really strange, ever put to much oil in your engine? It shoots the guage all the way up even though you might have only put in an extra half quart.

Anywho i dont think its a problem, but if your engine starts knocking then you do have a problem.

When mine is cold the gauge reads 0 and the idiot light is on. Read on this sight that others have had the same problem as was fixed by replacing the sending unit.

Does you’re engine make noise on start up?

The gauge may be sticking. My 95 does that. Try smacking the dash board by the gauge. If it jumps right up, it's a guage problem so I wouldn't worry about it.

I would say its not any oil pressure problem, or the needle would be the least of your worries. The new ones seem to have problems with the pressure sender. Both our '00 and '02 went. My '00 would do the same as yours. 0psi for the first few miles down the road. '02 just dropped to 0psi going down the road one day.

My 01 sport has been like this since the day I bought it with 37000 on it. The oil guage works after it warms up or is jarred from a pothole, seems that the temp guage does the exact same thing. definately a sensor problem.
