Welcome to the forum! Issue could be several things. The clunk could be a clutch pack engaging or it could be a U-joint. Honestly your best bet would be to bring it to someone to have them diagnosis the issue and then do the work yourself if you are capable of doing so. There is plenty of how-to's and different write ups on different situations that you should be able to take care of the issue yourself without any problems.

My guess, and again this is just a guess, is that the transfer case's shift rail is mechanically stuck in the Neutral position. There are a few things that could cause this but for now, try parking the vehicle, disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes, and reconnecting it. Sometimes, this forces the 4wd system to force-reset itself and some transfer cases that are stuck in LO range are forced back into the default HI range through this method.

What engine do you have? The reason I ask is you state you have AWD. AWD was only available on 5.0 equipped Explorers & Mountaineers. V6 models have Control Trac which people often confuse with AWD.

If you have a 5.0 Explorer, what IZwack said about it being the transfer case's shift rail will not apply.

Doh - Dan Whitaker is correct, I didn't see the OP's mention of "AWD" - disregard my post if the vehicle is AWD.
