How did my new Limited lose over 1,400 pounds vs my 2007 Eddie Bauer?

Did the old ladder style frame weight that much?

Impressive.

That was Mullaly's challenge to the team- shed weight to make it more efficient, or he was going to discontinue the vehicle. ;)

Interesting title to the thread too, wavelengths?

Love the thread title!

My old Explorer weighted about 6,000 pounds.....I thought.

The new Explorer weights just over 4,600 pounds.

Do I have this right?

I would prefer the Explorer to go back to the weight of the 95 - 2001 Explorers. They weighed about 4 thousand pounds. My XLT weighed with running boards and roof rack 3,800 pounds.

It really depends on options but the usual number thrown around is 4695 lbs curb weight.

Hey all,

Just wanted to confirm the approximate Base curb weight of the Explorer:

Front-wheel Drive (3.5L) 4557
All-Wheel Drive 4732

Like some of you mentioned, the weight will vary some based on the additional option packages added. Just to clarify, it is true that the Explorer went on a diet, however, it wasn't a Low Carb diet. It was more like a "high-tech materials only" diet.

For starters, the A- and B-Pillars are constructed of high-strength boron steel for greatly increased roof crush strength. The front-end support structure features first-in-class technology, constructed using a lightweight composite (40 percent glass-filled polypropylene with a glass-mat overlay), which matches the lateral stiffness of magnesium while reducing weight.

As you can see, many changes went into this Explorer to make it the most efficient Explorer, yet. Awesome, huh?

Joe's article said that the new explorer lost almost 100-pounds from the gen IV.

Yes, the weight loss is not as significant as I had originally thought, mainly because I was looking at curb weight of one truck and the gross weight of the other.
