did the 2000 V8 explorer ever come in 2x4?

Yes they did. Mostly in warmer cliamate states that don't get snow but there are some in the snowy states as well.

easiest way to find out ask the lady if there is a knob (transfer case shifter)to left of the stereo above the cig lighter.

Dave, mine doesn't. AWD models aren't switchable. V8 only come in AWD or 2WD so no V8 2nd gens should have the knob. Another subtle difference is the cluster on 4WD models (SOHC and V6 OHV) show "4 Hi and 4Lo" on the rightmost cluster overlay. AWD and 2WD don't have these gels on the overlay.

Simple. V8 only came with AWD or 2WD. AWD is not switchable between 4Hi or 4Lo like a true 4WD system. It's "full time AWD" so no switch is needed. The radio bezels on ALL V8 equipped Explorers from the 2nd gen (96-01) would not come with a knob on the bezel as none is needed.

The switch Dave mentioned was only available on 4WD systems on V6 equipped Explorers.

Remember, AWD is not the same as 4WD.

Look for the extra driveshaft. Quickest way to distinguish between the two.

If you dont wanna crawl underneath it, just turn the steering wheel all the way one way and look at the front suspension. If you see an axle shaft(cv half shaft) between the control arms, its AWD. No axle, its 2wd.

Thanks for all the replies. It was a older lady's explorer and she had no clue about axles so I got her to get me a pic. It was 2 wheel drive......
